Last Friday, Class I had the pleasure of virtually welcoming Mrs. Dede Winkfield into their classrooms. Mrs. Dede Winkfield is a first-grade teacher, who states that "first grade is her first love." Her mother was Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s personal assistant. Growing up, Mrs. Winkfield spent most of her time with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family. She shared her personal stories about what she remembers about her time with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and how he impacted her life. We are excited to announce that Brearley is expanding its leadership team to advance the School's progress in becoming an antiracist community. Dr. Tanya Huelett, whose work in recent years as Brearley’s Director of Equity and Community Engagement has impacted every area of Brearley, will take on the new senior administrative role of Director of Inclusive Teaching and Learning. Reporting to the Head of School and in collaboration with Dr. Jim Mulkin, Assistant Head of Scho...ol for Academic Life, and the faculty, Dr. Huelett will focus her expertise on the academic program, curriculum, and pedagogy, as well as the hiring, professional development, evaluation, professional standards and retention of faculty. As Class ID transitioned from number bonds into addition, students learned how to count up from the greater number and how to add in two steps, counting two sets and then calculating the total. In Class ID, students begin with the physical combination of two groups of objects into one total set, then to pictorial representations of adding groups together, and then finally, the symbolic number sentence introducing the addition symbol. All this rain is not letting our Kindergarten students forget it’s pumpkin season! They are reading books about pumpkins and counting pumpkin seeds. With 7 days until Election Day, Middle and Upper School Assemblies continue to invite speakers to discuss voting, politics and the importance of civic engagement. The message is clear: the most important way we uphold our democracy is to vote. Ongoing discussions include: * Understanding the Electoral College * Voter suppression and voting rights issues... * The history of suffragists standing up for political equality and the 19th Amendment * The impact of social media on politics and specifically the relationship between social media and democracy While most students are not eligible to vote, political engagement resources that show how to get involved at any age have been shared with students.
