Unpublished illustration for "Candide" by Rockwell Kent (18821971) Lithograph, 1928, signed in graphite at lower right Image: 2 1/8 x 4 15/16 in. (5.4 x 12.6 cm) sheet: 4 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. (12.1 x 18.4 cm) The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the only other impression I have been able to discover.... Custom framed by @brentanos in this hand-carved, hand-finished banya and 12kt white gold leaf frame. From the Brentano personal collection, not for sale. In 1928, Random House commissioned the great American artist Rockwell Kent to illustrate Voltaire’sCandideas the first book under its imprint. The volume’s colophon page contains the image of a house intended to be where Candide and his companions lived and where they cultivated the final garden of the tale which became thecompany’s logo, still in use today. Kent’sCandideis one of the landmarks of the American illustrated book, with specially made paper from France, a new typeface from Germany, and multiple illustrations, all exquisitely integrated.
