Today we honor the life of Martin Luther King Jr. who said, Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." We are inspired by his example of a life dedicated to justice and equality for all people, as we re-commit to serve the women and children of Uganda in 2021.

In 2015, Daniel Greene worked as an intern for Brick by Brick Uganda. Here he is with our School Program Coordinator, Max Ssenyonga. In a magical moment, it was Daniel's generous donation during our Annual Appeal that put us past our goal of $100,000! Thank you Daniel and all our many donors!

From all the staff of Brick by Brick Uganda, we wish a Happy Kwanzaa to all of our African-American friends and supporters. May 2021 be a year where we all live by the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba), and faith (imani).

In The Lancet Global Health, Andrea Nove and colleagues estimated that 67% of maternal deaths, 64% of neonatal deaths, and 65% of stillbirths in the 88 low-income and middle-income countries accounting for the vast majority of these deaths could be averted. The solution? Universal provision of care by midwives who meet international standards and are integrated into health systems in the context of multidisciplinary teams. Our Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) Program is training and mentoring 300 midwives in the Rakai and Kyotera Districts to dramatically reduce maternal and newborn mortality. #SafeMotherhood #BuildingHealthyCommunities https://www.thelancet.com//PIIS2214-109X(20)3047/fulltext
