Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company 06.01.2021

PANDEMIC PROTOCOL Monday, January 4, 2021 Once again, the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company has had to resort to Virtual Training due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases. BKFC members will continue to exert the best efforts to learn and keep skills sharp while in-house training has been put on hold due to the current situation. A 36-minute training video was shared with all BKFC members.... This week's training revolved around vehicle extrication with a focus on a car on its roof. This scenario presents a special challenge to the victims and rescue personnel. 90% of the techniques used are the same as in any other extrication with a few critical exceptions. As always, struts and jacks are necessary to ensure vehicle stabilization. It is important to take the weight off the roof without causing a dangerous situation while working to remove the patient(s). Responders are advised to eliminate cutting seatbelts which would drop the patient. Also, it is imperative that posts that may harness seatbelts, are not cut, as they provide support for the weight of the overturned vehicle. In a typical MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident), the dash is cut away from the victim(s). The danger in an upside down vehicle is a collapse on occupants that could cause more injury. So extra measures must be taken. Another consideration is the fact that in a usual MVA the battery is cut to prevent triggering undeployed airbags. This step may not be possible in this situation. Training for this type of crash is done to keep in mind that time is of the essence to not only get an injured party or parties on to medical attention, but also to get first responders back in service for the next call. Other companies provide Mutual Aid to cover calls, but every moment counts in an emergency situation. Just because normal life is interrupted by this pandemic does not mean our community has to worry about not being thoroughly covered by trained professionals that are there 24/7 to tend to any and every incident... Stay safe.

OPERATIONAL READINESS TRAINING The Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company conducted training at the former Chambers Estate on North Street with permission from St. Joseph's Church on Monday, December 7th. BKFC members worked on stretching and advancing hoselines and laddering a building. Firefighters worked on passive entry techniques relating to locked doors, deploying the hoselines then stretching to the point of entry, and advancing the hoses through the building to the seat of... the fire. Members also worked with ladders to keep sharp on the skills necessary to properly deploy during an incident. Training is imperative when the real thing happens and lives and/or property are on the line. Special thanks to St. Joseph's Church for use of the facility.
