Happy 130th birthday to pioneering author, anthropologist, and folklorist Zora Neale Hurston! While she was born in 1891, Hurston often claimed 1901 to be her b...irth year as she received a gift of books at the age of ten that she said opened her mind to literature and represented her literary birth. Hurston grew up in Eatonville, Florida, an all-black town formed following the U.S. Civil War. This gave her a unique viewpoint on the African American experience that clearly comes through in her writing. Hurston was a flamboyant figure in the Harlem Renaissance in the late 1920s. Later, she used her training in anthropology to collect and retell traditional folk stories from the many regions and countries, including the American South, Honduras, Jamaica, and Haiti. Although she wrote published more than fifty short stories, plays, and essays as well as four novels, including her best-known novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God," Hurston’s dialectical style fell out of favor with the literary world. Hurston might have fallen into complete obscurity following her death in 1960 were it not for the work of another African American writer, Alice Walker, whose 1975 Ms. Magazine article "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston," revived interest in Hurston’s incredible body of writing. The reemergence of Hurston's work coincided with the emergence of other female authors such as Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Walker herself, whose writing focused on the African American experience. Fortunately, Hurston's true genius is now well-recognized and "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is considered an American literary classic. Through her life and legacy, she demonstrated the truth of her famous assertion: "A thing is mighty big when time and distance cannot shrink it." Great tip from @hvkitchendesigncenter #pinebushchamber Posted @withregram @hvkitchendesigncenter I almost put this in a story but wanted to drop it here. We ...can make beautiful kitchens, but it is more important to consider what is inside those kitchens. Not everyone has a kitchen with food inside of it. We support food banks because this is a cause near and dear to our hearts. #hvkd #hvkdc #foodinsecurity #foodbank #supportfoodbanks

Today is All Souls Day, and fittingly, today also would have been the 42nd birthday of Payton James Crowell. Today I'd like to remember my 'little' brother by asking all of you to consider becoming organ donors, as he was. He lives on in so many ways-- through his kids and grandkids, through our memories, and through the lives of those he impacted with the final gift of himself.

*** PLEASE SHARE this message concerning two local families in need from Supervisor Brian Maher: At approximately 2AM this morning, two local families lost the...ir home to a devastating house fire. This two family home was located on Plains Road in the Town of Montgomery. Scott & Loretta Rizzo along with their daughter, Faith Rizzo, a senior attending Valley Central High School, awoke to a fire alarm and smoke. Scott & Loretta are active members in our community and lead the children’s ministry at their church. Frankie & Sherri Holmes, along with their daughter, Jasmine Holmes, a recent Valley Central graduate who also works at local Montgomery Business Astoria Hudson, awoke early this morning to a fire alarm as well. They grabbed their dog, River, and made it to safety before watching their home and all of their possessions destroyed in front of their eyes, the day after Christmas. It is during times like these that our community always bands together. The #TOMSTRONG Community Response Team has been activated. Both of these families have been put up at the Montgomery Holiday Inn Express and our response team will be picking up the cost. This will allow them a temporary reprieve to evaluate their next steps. Each family has different needs and our job will be to assist them in any way we can. With the funds we raise we plan to help offset their expenses that insurance may not cover as well as continue to assist with their lodging. We will not be accepting donations of clothing or any other items at this time. Instead we ask that you join in making whatever donation you are able to make. These donations will go directly to offsetting the expenses incurred by both families. Thank you to the Village of Montgomery St. Pats Ramble Committee for agreeing to get us started with an initial $1000 donation! Please make your donation by clicking the link below and SHARE this post with your friends, family & social media network. Our town always has our residents backs in times of need. Let’s show some real community and holiday spirit by helping out these two amazing families! https://cfosny.org//pro/tomstrong-community-response-team/ The #TOMSTRONG Community Response Team is a charitable fund of the The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan making your donation tax-deductible.

"I always tell people that I became a writer not because I went to school but because my mother took me to the library. I wanted to become a writer so I could s...ee my name in the card catalog." -- Sandra Cisneros A Mighty Girl wishes a happy birthday to author Sandra Cisneros! Cisneros earned a place as a prominent voice in Chicana literature with her acclaimed works "The House on Mango Street," "Woman Hollering Creek," and "Caramelo." As the only daughter in a poverty-stricken family of six brothers in Chicago, Cisneros often felt isolated growing up, a feeling exacerbated by her extended family members' continuous migration between Mexico and the United States. The experience, she said, was like "always straddling two countries ... but not belonging to either culture." Her work draws heavily from her childhood experience, dealing primarily with growing up in poverty, her struggle against patriarchal constraints, and her experience of being Chicana in an Anglo-American culture. Her most famous work, The House on Mango Street, is a series of vignettes about a young Latina girl coming-of-age in Chicago, striving to discover who she will become -- for ages 14 and up at at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-house-on-mango-street For books for all ages starring Latina Mighty Girls, visit our blog post "60 Empowering Books Starring Latina Mighty Girls" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=13062 If you'd like to encourage your kids' interest in creative writing, there are several excellent guides for young writers: "Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/writing-magic), "Spilling Ink: A Young Writer’s Handbook" for ages 9 to 14 (https://www.amightygirl.com/spilling-ink), and "Dear Ally, How Do You Write a Book?" for ages 13 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/dear-ally) Image credit: Esmeralda Contreras

LOL. Did you know that in their journals, Lewis and Clark spelled "ask" as "aks"-- because that's how it used to be spelled & pronounced? Now we denigrate folks who say it that way. The English language-- all languages-- evolve. This is a funny post as an English wonk, but also it's a good reminder not to be a language snoot. I'm a weird English wonk, I know.

A beautiful and timely poem from Neil Gaiman.

Broad Leaf Books 18.03.2020

My first novel, The Secret Life of Bees, was published when I was 53 years old. This photo was taken on the dock behind our house the day it came out. In the pi...cture, I appear calm and collected, but inside I was filled with awe and incredulity. I was overcome with the realization that I’d done what I’d set out to do: I’d written a novel. That was the awe part. That the novel had gotten published was the incredulity part. Approaching fifty, I’d worried that I couldn’t find the potency to generate the third act I wished for. I began writing The Secret Life of Bees at 48, filled with self-doubt. I’ve told the following story a hundred times, but here goes the hundred and first. Not long after this photo was taken, I gave a talk about my new novel at a bookstore. During the Q&A a woman asked, Did you write the book yourself? I still have no idea what she meant, but what popped into my head was that she’d taken one look at me and thought, This woman couldn’t possibly write a novel. No doubt this came to me because I’d spent a lot of time thinking the same thing. Here’s something else I’ve said a hundred times (probably more like a thousand): writing is an act of courage. That’s true at any age. But maybe we have to take an extra deep breath when we begin what feels like a daring venture later in life. Fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty it’s never too late. Life is filled with large and small renaissances all the way to the end. Older women, particularly, have cultivated the wild heart, wise mind, and daring spirit that make third acts and late life renaissances possible. I mean, if you’re going to err, you might as well do so on the side of audacity.

"Dozens of stories of heroism emerged after the attacks, including that of the inspiring courage of First Lieutenant Annie G. Fox (Army Nurse Corps)," who was the first woman in American history to be awarded the Purple Heart medal. "Though at the time the Purple Heart award was most commonly awarded to service members wounded by enemy forces, it was occasionally awarded for any 'singularly meritorious act of extraordinary fidelity or essential service.' The Purple Heart Award criteria changed in 1942 to be limited to wounds received as a result of enemy action. On October 6, 1944, Lt. Fox was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in replacement for her Purple Heart, which was rescinded.".... Patsy Mink -- the first woman of color elected to the U.S. Congress and the co-author of the landmark women's educational equity Title IX Amendment -- was born ...on this day in 1927. A third generation Japanese American from Hawaii, Mink became engaged in political activism from a young age, in part motivated by witnessing the discrimination her father faced as the only Japanese American civil engineer working on Maui during the World War II period. In one of her early acts of political activism, when she moved to the mainland to attend the University of Nebraska, Mink organized a coalition of students, community members, and businesses to successfully bring an end to the university's long-standing policy of racially segregating student housing. After graduating, she applied to twenty medical schools but was denied admission to all because none would accept women. Mink decided that the judicial process would be the best way to compel the schools to accept female students and shifted her focus to law. She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1951. After returning to Hawaii, Mink was elected to the Hawaii Territorial Legislature and, after Hawaii became a state in 1959, she served in the Hawaii State Senate. In 1965, Mink became the first woman of color elected to the U.S. Congress where she served from 1965-1977 and again from 1990 until her death in 2002. During her tenure in Congress, Mink gained a reputation as a vocal advocate for women's rights and civil rights, and was a leading opponent to the war in Vietnam. Although her outspokenness engendered criticism at times, Mink believed in standing by her ideals, famously stating: "It is easy enough to vote right and be consistently with the majority. But it is more often more important to be ahead of the majority and this means being willing to cut the first furrow in the ground and stand alone for a while if necessary." One of her greatest legacies is the Title IX Amendment of the Higher Education Act, the breakthrough 1972 U.S. civil rights law which prohibits gender discrimination in any educational program or activity. Mink was one of the bill's principal authors and the driving force behind its passage; it was later renamed Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act in her honor. Filmmaker Kimberlee Bassford, who made the documentary "Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority," describes Mink's influence as follows: "Mink's story captures the spirit of a generation of trailblazing women and shows that one person armed with vision, drive, and perseverance can make a difference. I never doubted that I would have the opportunity to go to college even graduate school and to play sports. Women of my generation take for granted the very things that Patsy Mink fought for." Mink, who also became first Asian American to seek the presidential nomination during the 1972 election, passed away in 2002. Her death occurred one week after the 2002 primary election, too late for her name to be removed from the general election ballot. As a result, Mink was posthumously re-elected to Congress on November 5, 2002. Patsy Mink is one of the trailblazing women in U.S. politics featured in the excellent book, "Leading the Way: Women In Power" for ages 9 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/leading-the-way For a wonderful book for teaching tweens and teens about the history of Title IX and its impact on girls' lives, we highly recommend "Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America" for ages 11 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/let-me-play There is also a fantastic picture book about trailblazing women in sports - that includes an introduction to Title IX - for ages 6 to 9 at https://www.amightygirl.com/girls-with-guts For more books for children and teens that celebrate women's contributions to politics today and in the past, check out our blog post, Remember the Ladies: 25 Children's Books on Women in Politics at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=11162 And, for more stories of female trailblazers in all fields including science, the arts, and athletics, visit A Mighty Girl's "Role Models" section at https://www.amightygirl.com/boo/history-biography/biography

Push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. Go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the s...un rise. Push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. Wake up in the morning feeling re-energised and comfortable. Lie in your garden, feel the sunshine on your skin. Get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. Fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. Sit and eat it and do nothing else. Stretch. Start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. Roll your head. Stretch your fingers. Stretch everything. Buy a 1L water bottle. Start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice. Buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. Write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. No detail is too small. Strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear drawer into the washing machine. Wash, then hang them in the sunshine with care. Make your bed in full. Dig your fingers into the earth, plant a seed. See your success as it grows everyday. Organise your room. Fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. Light a beautiful candle. Breathe. Practice your deep breathing. Ground yourself. Have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. Wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. Lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck. Push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. Smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. Bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. Realise you can learn from your dog. Message old friends with personal jokes. Reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. Push yourself to follow through. Think long and hard about what interests you. Crime? Sex? Boarding school? Long-forgotten romance etiquette? Find a book about it and read it. There is a book about literally everything. Become the person you would ideally fall in love with. Let cars merge into your lane when driving. Pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. Stick your tongue out at babies. Help an animal. Compliment people on their cute clothes. Challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. Then two. Then a week. Walk with a straight posture. Look people in the eye. Ask people about their story. Talk to acquaintances so they become friends. Lie in the sunshine. Daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. Open your eyes. Take small steps to make it happen for you... ~ Emma Elsworthy image | Michael Sleet

For this Christmas, my immediate and extended family agreed to a price limit and only buying local or charitable gifts. So far we've had a blast finding Laughing Man coffee, John's Crazy Socks, Paper Clouds Apparel, NY local soaps, Slambovians merch, Inquiring Minds books, and other goodies. This is the most fun we've had Christmas shopping in a while! Buy local, do good. Be the change.

Due to an unexpected doctor's appointment, the Pine Bush store will be closed 1:45-4 today, Wednesday, November 4th. We recommend you read a book rather than looking at election results. To tide you over, here is a picture of a cat. ~Amanda
