Bronx Opera Company 06.04.2021

We were devastated to learn of the passing of our friend Glynn Mapes. Glynn began performing with BxO in 2002, and has been a member of our Board of Directors for over a decade. Anyone involved in BxO's shows over the past twenty years will remember Glynn as one of the bedrocks of our chorus, always good-natured, kind, and dedicated. He took on responsibility for organizing the traditional potluck meals on Double-Run Day during tech week for each production - a crucial moment... for respite and refueling during that long, often grueling day of rehearsal. Glynn's insights as a Board member were invaluable and helped to shape the path our company has taken over the past ten years. Below is part of a beautiful message we received from Glynn's daughter, Susannah... "As you know, Glynn came to opera performance late in life. He had spent 35 years with the Wall Street Journal as a reporter, foreign correspondent, and editor. He had always been driven by his passion for music, and was delighted to give more time to it following retirement by joining Bronx Opera. But we were all surprised (especially Glynn himself) at how much he enjoyed being on stage, and even (gasp!) dancing. He loved performing with all of you in what the press has called the feisty Bronx Opera." We honor Glynn's love of our "feisty" company by dedicating our upcoming virtual production of Mozart's The Impresario (aka "The Zoompresario") to his memory. He will be deeply missed.

BxO and the Orchestra of The Bronx are so honored to have been asked by our north Bronx neighbors, Montefiore Health System, to take part in their recent video project, which thanks NYC's essential health workers for their heroic efforts during the COVID crisis -- a message with which all wholeheartedly agree. Each of our lives has been touched by this terrible pandemic, and we are deeply thankful to the hardworking healthcare professionals on the front lines. Artistic Director Michael Spierman and Orchestra Contractor Teresa Kubiak, along with members of our orchestra, made recordings and filmed overnight with Montefiore's amazing crew. Stay tuned for more of this kind of content!
