Some of my favorites from last year @ Brooklyn, New York

Dan Sullivan Photography 25.03.2021

33 Hours of Melotte 15 located inside the Heart Nebula, imaged from Brooklyn. There’s only so much detail you can resolve through NYC’s intense light pollution and I think I hit diminishing returns after about 20 hours, but figured I’d go for more since I had the opportunity. This was my longest exposure ever and while the conditions weren’t perfect, I’m happy with the results. Gear:... * ZWO ASI1600mm Pro * Sigma 150-600mm lens at 600mm * Astromechanics ASCOM lens adaptor * ZWO EFW, Ha, Oiii, Sii * ASI290 Guide Camera * Orion 50mm Guidescope * iOptron CEM60 Mount * Beelink MiniPC Acquisition: * Focal Length: 600mm * Aperture: f/8 * Gain: 139 * Offset: 21 * Temperature: -20C * Hydrogen Alpha 107 x 300 (8.9 Hours) * Oxygen III 114 x 300 (9.5 Hours) * Sulpher II 177 x 300 (14.8 Hours) * Dates: Nov 20, 27, Dec 2, 8, 10, 11 * Location: Brooklyn, NY * Bortle 9 (White zone) * Polar Aligned with SharpCap * Captured with N.I.N.A Processing * Darks: 30 * Flats: 30 per channel * Dark Flats: 30 per channel * Stacked in Astro Pixel Processor, 2x DrizzleProcessed in PixInsight & Photoshop Pixinsight Processing Linear * Dynamic Crop * ABE * EZ Decon & Denoise on Ha * HistogramTransformation to stretch each channel. Push Oiii pretty far. Nonlinear * LRGBCombination SHO * Invert > SCNR > Invert to remove green stars * A couple rounds of Curves * ACDNR * LocalHistogramTransformation * DarkStructureEnhance Photoshop * Curve adjustment layer * Level adjustment layer * Selective Color adjustment layer * Selective clone stamping to fix some bloated stars (Oiii had bad imaging conditions and had bloated stars causing ringing) * Added stretched Ha layer with adjusted curves on top with Luminosity blending mode to remove more noise and preserve detail * Resampled to 50%

The Soul Nebula Happy Halloween! The Soul Nebula located in the constellation Cassiopeia and is about 100 light years across with an estimated age of 1 million years. This nebula is being carved out by the stellar winds from the stars embedded within it, a process that leaves behind large pillars of material pointing inwards. These pillars are very dense and have stars forming at their tips. Each pillar spans about 10 light years.... This is a total of 5.5 hours of exposures from my apartment’s rooftop in Brooklyn.
