Today for Women’s History Month, we’re spotlighting the amazing, Brooklyn born Shirley Chisholm! In 1968, Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district for seven terms. During her career, Chisholm led expansion of food and nutrition programs for the poor, expanded unemployment benefits to domestic workers in NYC, and worked to improve opportunities for inner-city residents. After retirement, sh...e was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Chisholm faced gender-bias and discrimination throughout her career, and even ran for president during her congressional term. She said, "The next time a woman of whatever color, or a dark-skinned person of whatever sex aspires to be president, the way should be a little smoother because I helped pave it." #womenshistorymonth #shirleychisholm #congress #blackhistory #brooklyn #congress #president #politics #wearebcs
Today we’re highlighting The BCS Transitional Living Community (TLC)! TLC supports homeless women who are suffering from severe mental illness and dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault, or trauma. Did you know...TLC staff and residents transformed a formerly derelict vacant lot into a flower and vegetable garden! The community garden has become our residents’ preferred setting for many of TLC’s group activities, that help them prepare for successful living outside the shelter. For TLC residents, tending the garden, or simply spending time there, is healthy and highly therapeutic. #homelesswomen #womensshelter #mentalhealth #rehabilitation #wearebcs #garden #spring #sia2021

Today, BCS was featured in the The New York Times as part of their Neediest Cases Fund! When Brooklyn shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Farragut Food Club stepped in and helped our Farragut Cornerstone Program distribute food to over 1,500 struggling families. We’d love to send an extra special shoutout to Joyce Bryant and Virginia Moses, the volunteers who helped identify the people who needed assistance! Degener reminds us not only of Brooklyn’s potential, but of its resilience to stay strong even in the face of adversity. Thanks for investing in our community, Alicia!
