Continuing our (small) project to honor the contributions of Black Americans to our work and context, our second pioneer-to-know is Philip Emeagwali. Not only is his story of emigration and achievement a powerful reminder of our country's promise, he designed the program for the Connected Machine, linking over 65,000 computers in parallel to achieve pardon the pun unparalleled speed. With nearly 50,000 students and over 200 academic programs, Michigan State's vast digital platform serves the complex needs of an incredibly diverse community. Building on our deep user research, we helped the school consolidate 3 flagship web properties that reach millions of people each year. After producing a more intuitive information architecture, we designed a modular, flexible design system capable of scaling across the university, and that reflects the tenacious, ambitious MSU brand.
