I am sad to announce that Brooklyn Stitchery has closed it’s doors permanently. She was, for my students, staff and myself, our happy place that provided more than just classes. It was like a family. Thank you to all of our customers that have supported Brooklyn Stitchery over the past six years. You have made my dream a reality and we were happy to assist you on your sewing journey. Although our location has closed, Brooklyn Stitchery will still live within my soul as I’m sure she will for many of you. Every exit is an entrance somewhere else. -Tom Stoppard

Happy Earth Day! Last year I wrote about my obsession with using up my scraps from the classes and showed how I was making bags from them. This year I started to use the small strip scraps by randomly sewing pieces together without cutting them first to make a fabric. From the fabric, I either cut 12 1/2 blocks or used the whole piece that I quilted to batting. Each bag is designed around the look of the quilted fabric and brought together with navy denim. I am careful to ...cut the denim so that I have very little, if any scraps left over ( they will end up back in my scrap pile to make more fabric). The inside of the bags utilize the larger pieces of scraps in the coordinating fabrics and pockets are inspired by the various shapes of the scraps. It has become a creative, joyful process for me!. How are you using your scraps? #sewing #usingmyscraps #diy #creative #creativesewing #nyc #brooklyn #earthday @ Brooklyn Stitchery See more

The last batch of the 192 masks that I made for healthcare workers in Florida are ready to be shipped. Donation requests for fabric masks are still coming in to the group that I am working with, so if you have supplies & a machine at home you can help too (provided that you or anyone you live with are not sick). A local Bay Ridge group called The Mask Makers can be found on Facebook along with countless others. Find your group or local healthcare facilities that need masks and start sewing! #covid19 #facemask #nyc #bayridge #brooklyn #sewing #sewingwarriors

Today I am grateful that my skills can help during this time. My current sewing project is making face masks. I sent out an email today on information on how to make a face mask and included instructions on how I am making them production style. Here are the photos to show you what I am doing. So far I have made 70 masks this week and have another 190 on my agenda for the weekend. Swipe to see the progression from start to finish. 1. Cut all of your pieces - fabric & elastic.... 2. Sew the elastic on each side of one piece of fabric, chain stitching them together. I keep them all together when I flip to the other side. 3. Lay your other fabric piece over the one with the elastic, right sides together. Stitch all around leaving a small opening on the bottom (longer) edge. Turn to right side & give a quick press. 4. Make pleats on each side (this is the only time that I pin & notice that I use the tip of the pin to keep that pleat in place as I sew) and top stitch all around. Stay strong & keep sewing!

Same bomber jacket pattern but different interpretations. Love to see how each student added their own creativity to their jacket. Children & teen’s sewing workshops for President’s week school break are on the website.
