As some of you may or may not know, Local 71 lost two members, co-workers and friends in 2013 to suicide. We are all forever changed by this tragic event. My hope is that through education and awareness, those suffering with a mental illness will be prompted to seek help. This year, I will once again be participating in the Out of the Darkness Community walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Funds from this event will fund education and research programs for... those who suffer from mental disorders, who have lost a loved one to suicide. Last year, the community walks raised over $9.1 million. This year, our goal is $11 million. On Saturday, September, 13th, 2014, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host the Buffalo Out of the Darkness Community Walk. We hope you will consider walking with us as we travel the beautiful paths at Delaware Park to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Please visit www.outofthedarkness.org and register to walk with me. If you are unable to join, please consider donating to help me reach my goal. You may either donate online (click here), or you may send a check (made payable to AFSP) to: AFSP, 120 Wall Street, 29th Floor, New York, NY 10005 (see attached form). Please write my name in the memo line of all checks. Thank you so much for your support!
Today's the day!!! Get out and VOTE for Kathy Hochul to ensure your future!
This Tuesday, September 9th we are given a great opportunity to once again support Kathy Hochul, a leader who has represented working men and women in the Western New York region. Buffalo Building Trades will continue to support Kathy so that she can fight for the rights of our members to ensure your future is enduring. Please take the time to vote for workers rights by electing Kathy Hochul as Lieutenant Governor of New York State so she can continue to strengthen the position of working men and women.
Courage - Bravery doesn't mean you aren't scared. It means you go anyway. Thank you Veterans for ALL that you do!

Congrats to Local 71's spectacular retirees for their amazing job on these lanterns for the Central Terminal! From creating the layout and design from only an old picture to taking the time to make sure that each one was crafted perfectly, they've really worked hard to make these unique pieces beautiful!
We are so proud of our Sheet Metal Workers Local 71's amazing Retirees that continue to make a wonderful contribution to all of Buffalo! We would also like to acknowledge two more amazing Retirees that have been working on this project, Andy Adams and Henry Forman. Thank you for all that you do! It's nice to see their hard work recognized.
