This is the former St. Francis Xavier Church which is now the Buffalo Religious Arts Center.
Through these photos of churches the history of immigration in Buffalo can be traced. A lot people went to seek wotk in the small towns surrounding Buffalo.
These photos are over 100 years old - commentary is posted under some photos. We can tell a lot about immigration to America in the early 1900’s by looking at the churches. More posts to follow.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a Manger because there was no room in the Inn. Luke2:7

It’s interesting how the sun on one side of the building makes some things so bright and on the other side this window appears to be darkened
A collection of Baptismal fonts at the Buffalo Religious Arts Center. The water basin opens by rotating. On some lighter weight fonts the top lifts off.
This organ (c 1890’s) was donated to the Buffalo Religious Arts Center from the recently closed Holy Angels Parish, Porter Avenue, Buffalo, NY
It’s important to know that the Buffalo Religious Arts Center’s collection is from the many closed churches in Buffalo. But more importantly, it is a collection of art from those who were born in Europe and immigrated to America in search of a better life. This art is by Hillman T. Wiegand born in Denmark. His specialty is metal art. Captions below the pictures give further insight.
A special Labor Day post. This is a mural at the Buffalo Religious Arts Center. This mural was painted in honor of the laborers of the early 20th century. Follow the comments below the photos.
These stained glass windows are from the Basilica of the Angels located in Olean, NY. ... well worth the drive. The windows are by Daprato Regali of Chicago and New York. They were done in the Munich style which is indicated by dark, bold colors and attention to detail in design and also stenciling in fabric.
This window was repaired by Images in Glass of Hamburg, NY. Notice in the first pictures there is red glass that was placed where the window was damaged. In the second 2 pictures the red panels were removed and the artist at Images in Glass was able to paint the wheat, bringing the window back to it’s original form. This is what good restoration is about.
A new addition to the collection at the Buffalo Religious Arts Center, a window by Guidò Nunchieri (1885 - 1973) He was Italian born and immigrated to Montreal, Canada where he created over 5, 000 works of art, murals and stained glass windows. It is an honor to have his artwork.
Tapestries are notoriously difficult to preserve, but these fabrics are among the most lovely items you’ll find in any church. Here, we have a French banner... rescued from St James Church and now housed at the Buffalo Religious Arts Center. St James Church was dedicated by Bishop Dougherty on August 25, 1918. What happened to it? Sadly, I have no idea, so anyone who has information, feel free to pop your knowledge into the comments. See more
The stained glass windows at the Art Center are the Stations of the Cross
Thank you Queen City for these photos

The murals behind the altar in the former St Francis Xavier wrap around doorways and windows to form a comprehensive and cohesive tableau of the early Christians.
