Congratulations to all of this year's award winners from SUNY campuses across the state!
This afternoon various members of the University Police Department were recognized by the SUNY Police Chiefs Association via an online ceremony. The recipients, including Officers, Lieutenants, Investigators, a UPSA Coordinator, and our Chief, were recognized for outstanding service in the past year. Chief Carey was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his many years committed to serving University Police and Buffalo State College.
Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. We want to thank our Officers for everything they do for the University Police.
Earlier this week, Officer Jesse Gang graduated from the Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy. He started his Field Training yesterday. We are especially proud of Officer Gang as he started with UPD as a dispatcher and was an asset in that capacity for three years before entering the academy last fall. Please join us in congratulating Officer Gang on his graduation and new position at Buffalo State College!
Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy new year. Although this New Year's Eve will be different than any other, please stay safe if you are going out to celebrate.
Don't forget! Chief Carey will be participating in "Conversations with Hef" today at 12:15 via Zoom. Join us to learn more about UPD services and our community policing philosophy. Meeting ID 95052216634, Password 465567
The University Police Department temporarily suspended the grooming standards for the department to allow officers to participate in the eighth annual Goatees and Beards for Charity fundraiser. Participants contributed $50 each to grow a goatee or $75 each to grow a beard for eight weeks, until December 31, to benefit this charitable event. This year, 23 officers participated and raised $1,625 to be donated to the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline, which provides 24/7 confidential assistance, information, and referrals by trained police peers to working and retired police officers, corrections officers, dispatchers, and their families. The helpline assists with any issues that may affect work and family life. (Masks were only removed to take the photographs.)
On Tuesday 10/27 at 12:15, Chief Carey will be live via Zoom with Assistant Dean of Inclusion and Equity, Michael Heflin. They plan to discuss UPD's community policing philosophy and other resources offered by the department. Please join us!
University Police will test the Outdoor Alert Horn today, Thursday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m. This is only a TEST.
Buffalo State College’s 2020 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (PDF, 2.4 MB) is now available online. This report is required by federal law and contains policy statements and crime statistics for the college. The policy statements address Buffalo State’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security. For example, it includes policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. Three years’ worth of crime statistics are included for c...ertain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the college, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus. This report is posted online at: https://police.buffalostate.edu//up/Documents/2020_ASR.pdf You may also request a paper copy from University Police at (716) 878-6333 or [email protected] if you are unable to view or print a copy from the website.
Buffalo State University Police is proud to welcome new Officer Andrew Kurtzhalts to the department. He was officially sworn in with Chief Peter Carey yesterday. Officer Kurtzhalts will be finishing his training at the Police Academy in October. Welcome to the department, Officer Kurtzhalts!
Today we pause to remember and honor those who lost their lives that tragic day 19 years ago, as well as those who have succumbed to related sicknesses since. #NeverForget
Whether it was online or on-campus, your first week is in the books! Be smart and be safe out there.
We're all in this together, Bengals!
Fall 2020 Move-In is under way! UPD has been stationed around campus each day with members of @BuffStateResLife to make sure everyone feels safe and welcome. #BengalsWearTheirMasks
Later this month classes will begin in person, online and in hybrid formats. Buffalo State continues to work hard every day to make sure you stay safe while retaining access to everything you need for your courses this semester.
(Shared from Life at Buff State) We are excited for our Bengals to return to campus! It is up to each of us to do our part to keep ourselves and our community safe and healthy. All members of the campus community will be required to wear face coverings or masks at all times when inside all campus buildings, classrooms, labs and facilities. Masks must also be worn in all outdoor public spaces on campus (when six feet of physical distancing cannot be maintained). Social di...stancing means putting space between yourself and others. Stay at least six feet apart and avoid large gatherings. Monitor your symptoms daily and stay home if you feel sick. Wash your hands often, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds each time. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Remember Bengals, if you do your part to keep yourself safe, you will also keep your community safe. #BuffStateStrong See more
UPD sends our best wishes for you and your families in celebrating a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday.
In 2015, Buffalo State recognized the importance of creating a community policing philosophy. You recently read University Police Chief Carey’s perspective on creating and maintaining a UPD mission and philosophy that abhors the racially motivated abuses we have graphically witnessed all too often. This is a strong foundation to build on. Honesty and openness will be necessary in campus wide conversations as we move forward. We will need to listen to our multiple constituents and really hear them. Although we have done much in the space of equity on this campus, we will be challenged to do more. "The University Police Department at Buffalo State College strongly condemns the actions of those law enforcement officers involved in Louisville, Minneapolis, and Atlanta and stands in solidarity with the black community during this terribleand too often repeatedmoment in our nation’s history. I want every member of our community to know that you are welcome here. You are safe here. You matter here. Black Lives Matter here. Central to our steadfast commitment to community ...policing is trust. But we fully acknowledge that trust in police right now is understandably hard to come by. While the abhorrent use of force and brutality exhibited by some police officers across the country does not in any way represent what we stand for at Buffalo State, our officers stand ready to earn your trust through our actions, outreach, and engagement with the incredible community we serve. We are here to listen to you. We are here to support you. We are here to serve and protect you." Read the full letter from Chief Carey: https://dailybulletin.buffalostate.edu/message-bengal-commu
