Please Read! Gyms provide MENTAL HEALTH for so many. Good luck to this young girl, and anyone struggling right now! This email was sent to the #NYFC #StrongerTogether To Whom It May Concern: I am not sure if we can be of support to you in some way with your gym, class action lawsuit, however, my 16 year old daughter has been traumatized by the gym closures. As it stands, she still belongs to Rome Fit Body Boot Camp, Planet Fitness and the YMCA with combined memberships exist...ing for the last two and half years. My daughter suffered from obesity due to a medical condition known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Through medical specialists, she was able to lose some weight between diet and exercise initially. However, the biggest change came from a membership with Rome Fit Body Boot Camp back in October 2020. That gym provided a macro count-based diet specifically addressing my daughter's medical condition, combined with their fitness program and personal coaching. Overall, eating right and exercising has always been a mental booster for my daughter, add to that the results derived from the Rome Fit Body Boot Camp, my daughter was the best she has ever been, physically and mentally. Academically, she has always done well. My daughter belongs to all three gyms because she likes to switch things up. At the YMCA she likes spinning classes and swimming; at Planet Fitness, she builds muscle and at Rome Fit Body Boot Camp she works her entire body in a 30-minute class with the personal support of her coaches, as they guide her both physically and nutritionally. When NYS closed all things at the middle of March, it appeared that there was a medical necessity to it. We established our own gym in our home. We bought extra equipment and my daughter appeared to be motivated, but definitely saddened and worried as to when gyms would reopen. The longer the closures have gone on, the more my daughter's mental status has declined. At the end of May to the first week of June, when it became clear that gyms were not going to reopen, that was the final blow to my daughter's mental state. Her initial, mild, anxiety and depression at the start of the closures due to COVID, became full blown and very serious. By the end of May, the depression and anxiety were so bad, that I needed to reach out to a mental health counselor whom my daughter has continued to see since that time. It is well documented that my daughter is suffering from depression and anxiety due to gym closures. If we can help you in some way, please advise. My daughter articulates well and I believe could be of some use to your cause. We are very anxious for gyms to reopen. Cuomo says he wants data. Please circulate this study!! KB Randomized Re-Opening of Training Facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic (June 25, 2020)... ABSTRACT Background: Most countries closed training facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. This may have negative consequences for peoples health and wellbeing. We investigated SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission and COVID-19 disease attributable to training facilities. Methods: we randomized members 18 to 64 years with no COVID-19 relevant comorbidities at five training facilities in Oslo, Norway to access or no access to their facility. Facilities were opened from May 22, 2020 for individuals randomized to training, applying increased social distancing (1 meter for floor exercise, 2 meters for high-intensity classes), enhanced hand and surface hygiene. Locker rooms were open, showers and saunas were closed. We compared SARS-CoV-2 PCR status by self-administered naso-, oropharyngeal and sputum sampling after two weeks and clinical disease by linkage to electronic patient records after three weeks. Results: 3,764 individuals were randomized and included in analyses; 1,896 in the training and 1,868 in no-training arms. In the training arm, 81.8 percent trained at least once at the facilities. Out of 3,016 individuals who returned the SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests, there was one positive test. The positive individual was randomized to training, but had not used the facility before testing day. Contact tracing revealed the workplace as transmission source. A total of 106 individuals had outpatient hospital visits, and six individuals were admitted to hospital during the three weeks after intervention start, with no differences between arms. There were no outpatient visits or hospital admissions due to COVID-19 in either group.
