A previous post about kissing bug look-alikes brought up some questions about boxelder bugs. Unlike the kissing bug, boxelder bugs are native to New York. Adult...s are about inch long and black with orange or red markings. They seek dry, warm places to overwinter and will often invade homes in high numbers. When it gets warm during the spring, the bugs emerge and seek boxelder and other maple trees to lay their eggs. While they are a nuisance, boxelder bugs do not cause structural damage and do not bite or sting. For more information: http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/69194.html #ForestFriday

Western conifer seed bugs are often confused with the eastern conenose kissing bug, the menacing blood sucker from the south. Western conifer seed bugs feed on ...conifer seeds and are harmless to humans. Kissing bugs are known to bite humans and are potential carriers of Chagas disease. Fortunately, kissing bugs have not been found in New York State. How do you tell the insects apart? Kissing bugs are red and black, have thin antennae and slender legs. Conifer seed bugs are red, orange and brown and have wide hind legs. If you would like to have an insect identified, you can send a digital image or mail a specimen to the DEC’s Forest Health Diagnostic Laboratory. Enjoying New York State trails this holiday weekend? Be sure to purchase a Trail Supporter Patch for $5! All proceeds help maintain and enhance non-motorized re...creation trails throughout New York State. The new design is a blue disc with white lettering which resembles trail markers used by DEC to mark north-south directional trails. The patch can be ordered at all outlets where sporting licenses are sold or on DEC’s website. For more info, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/36016.html. See more
