With the way the world is & how supply chains are right now, please listen. This is something that you will need in January 2021. Something you'll hear about ...and not be able to get unless you pre-order now or find it on the day it releases. It's #THEPROPHETS by @SonofBaldwin. Just over halfway through the ARC and am in awe. @PutnamBooks, thank you for publishing it. I'm feeling like I felt when I read an ARC of AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE by Tayari Jones. The sentences beg me to read them over and over. Pearls of sentences. Go to your #IndieBookstore, #BlackBookstore and pre-order it now. Prepay. This is a novel to not miss out on. The Prophets really threw me for a loop when I finished it yesterday. Great books do that. @SonofBaldwin wrote an historical novel that speaks directly to us in our times urging us to examine how history is a circle that repeats itself. We gotta break that cycle. - @heidifindsbooks on Twitter

Fears and uncertainty about remaining in business are rooted in these Black bookstores' history. They've have always had to fight for their existence the FBI's COINTELPRO program even used to monitor them for supposedly being "culture centers for extremism." On top of a long legacy of Black businesses being denied loans and capital, the mandatory shutdowns during the pandemic and Black-owned businesses' difficulties accessing government relief funds became a new kind of existential threat. https://www.npr.org//a-bittersweet-moment-for-black-bookst

"Racism is what happens when you back one group's racial bias with legal authority and institutional control. ... When you back one group's collective bias with that kind of power, it is transformed into a far-reaching system. It becomes the default. It's automatic. It's not dependent on your agreement or belief or approval. It's circulating 24/7, 365. Racism is the foundation of the society we are in. And to simply carry on with absolutely no active interruption of that system is to be complicit with it. And in that way, we can say that nice, white people who really aren't doing anything other than being nice people are racist. We are complicit with that system. There is no neutral place."

I was so proud to carry Jennfier Finney Boylan's memoirs in the store, to be able to recommend them to customers. She's wonderful. "The plague of murder and violence against trans people at least 14 souls killed so far this year is a national shame. But to see so many people gathered to fight back did lift my spirits. And I was cheered, of course, to see the Supreme Court rule in our favor on Monday. Still, it’s infuriating that this case ever made it all the way to the S...upreme Court in the first place. I am tired of participating in debates about whether or not I deserve the same rights as everybody else. I am tired of famous authors punching down to hurt and dehumanize some of the most vulnerable people on earth. I am tired of being erased. I am tired of having to look into the eyes of a young man who has just told me, proudly, that I changed his mind about whether or not I should be exterminated, like a deer tick or a carpet beetle."
