Learned today its taken me 11 years and 9 months to come full circle back to where things started. Imagine that. Most often we feel like we've lost our way. Like things are out of proportion. Like we do not matter and anyone at anytime. The price of technology and science is isolation. I met a Gen Z'er who asked for direction while I was in New York City. I gave them. Then ... I simply asked where are you from? What happened next was heart breaking. It was as if this young person never had anyone in his 24 years ask him a question about him, who he was/is and what matters to him! He said his parents cared more about 'the benjamins' than they cared about him. He said he missed his grandparents who both passed away. His parent were always working and he had no one to talk to expect his friends. Then he just talked and talked while we walked north to 57th street from 45th in NYC. I just listened, only asking for help in understand a phrase or word that was unfamiliar to me. I'm so glad to meet you, he said. I won't say his name other than he was just so young to be such a lonely soul. I've only seen that level of loneliness in nursing homes where elderly have not family, or if they do have family those family members never visit them. When we arrived at 57th, he shook my hand. He did not ask for a business card or phone number and I did not offer. It was simply a moment in time in New York City. My heart aches over the pain of this young person. I wish him well, hoping I contributed something to his life in that moment. I can only turn to you, dear reader and ask this question: What have we done to the youngsters in our care?
