Asian American Student Advocacy Project 15.01.2021

Our ASAP Youth Leaders have been learning about their identities, their communities, and the foundations for why and how ASAP advocates on issues that impact #asianpacificamerican #youth. At the Shareback next Wednesday evening, they will be sharing their reflections on their experiences and motivations for joining the ASAP family and its mission to educate, train, and equip #APA youth as social justice leaders who challenge APA stereotypes and fight for educational equity and justice in public schools. We look forward to your presence, listening ear, and engagement, as we seek to demonstrate not only the need for, but the impact of APA youth voices. Zoom link shared to registered emails only!

#APAYES LAUNCHING NEXT MON MAY 18 1PM Originally set for April 5, our plans for our inaugural youth conference for and led by #asianpacificamerican #youth, the 2020 APA Youth for Equity Symposium, were thrown for a loop when #covid19 hit #nyc. The current public health crisis has only emphasized the ever-present need to provide safe platforms for youth to be heard, many of whom are facing the stresses of physical distancing, remote learning that has reduced them to grad...es and online clock-ins, supporting their loved ones through sickness and unemployment, and the loss of what we considered normal. APA-YES is more crucial than ever to give youth the safe space they have always needed, and connect with communities through the sharing and learning of experiences. On May 18, we will be launching APA-YES as a month-long social media campaign. We want to see you back HERE on our Insta to learn about what it means to be #apa and share your story.

#asianpacificamerican #youth have been facing anti-Asian discrimination, remote learning, and the need to protect their families on top of #covid19. This is compounded with the challenges of living in poverty, lack of language access, and lack of #representation we've always faced. ASAP creates a safe space and community for APA youth to learn about themselves and the diverse APA communities across #NYC. We believe APA youth can advocate for themselves and their communities t...hrough the power of their collective voices. We're now recruiting our new Youth Leaders for ASAP 2020-2021, who will join a community of driven, equity-oriented APA youth looking to create positive change. FIGHTING FOR FAMILY follows Chuh and Rex’s journey as they raise a family while physically separated and chronicles the challenges of deportation. The film discusses the historical context of war, refugee resettlement, criminalization, and highlights community resistance. It is not coincidence that we have decided to air this film on April 30th, a day of loss and mourning in many communities. On this day in 1975, families were separated as many folks had to escape without their families by their side. This was due to a war fueled by US imperialism. Today, families are still being separated by US imperialist systems. To that, we say #Not1MoreDeportation. Let’s work together to #BringChuhHome and pave a #NewWayForward. @raisenyc @mekongnyc_ @theseadproject

Asian Pacific American youth know best what it's like for them growing up in America. We believe in elevating these voices and stories that have always had the power to impact change on communities and systems, but may have been marginalized and left unheard. We are calling for APA youth to join us on Sunday, April 5 for our inaugural APA Youth for Equity Symposium (APA-YES), to explore APA identities, build community, and develop personal narratives that show the power of storytelling.
