At the @mwpai a few years back next to yet another major work we’ve placed in a museum collection during our 47 years in business. As Women’s History Month winds down i’d like to share a name that many of you might not be familiar with: Katherine Sophie Dreier (1877-1952). Dreier was an artist m, art patron, scholar, educator, and one of the most important collectors of modern Art in America in the first half of the 20th century. She was founder of the Society Anonyme along w...ith Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp, and that organization was responsible for 80 exhibitions in NYC between 1920 and 1940 which focused on cubist and modernist art. She’s a name that should be more known due to her major contributions to the art world. As an artist she created an incredibly innovative series of works which she called her abstract psychological portraits. I discovered this work, which is her abstract psychological portrait of the famous modern dancer and company leader Theodore Shawn. He was spiritual father to the likes of Martha Graham and those who would follow. It was painted in 1929, and the rarity of the work cannot be overstated. It is one of just a handful she created, one of which is of her close friend Duchamp. The photo lower right is The Large Glass installed in Dreier’s CT home (now in the collection of The Philadelphia Museum) where she enjoys a visit with the artist himself. Sweet memories for this art dealer of owning and placing a great painting! #katherinesdreier #abstractart #hudsonny #societeanonyme #marcelduchamp #katherinedreier #munsonwilliamsproctorartsinstitute #cubism See more

Just a little slice of our 2nd floor space, headlined by Carl Holty’s (1900-1973) stunning Red Gold stain painting from 1958. Exhibited that year in his first ever exhibition of stain paintings at venerable Graham Gallery in NYC, we own a rare color poster announcing the exhibition which the purchaser of this work will receive. Posters were used by Graham in their Madison Avenue sidewalk shadow box, enticing pedestrian visitations. This is a museum quality abstraction in phenomenal condition. Inquiries welcome. #carlholty #stainpainting #colorfieldpainting #postwarart #hudsonny #hudsonnyart

Spring. 1980’s. The subtle beauty of nature meets the subtle interpretation of Japanese born (1937) Naohiko Inukai. The artist came to the US in 1960 to study at Cooper Union, and for the next 20+ years exhibited and taught (Silvermine, Dartmouth, Cornell) while producing beautiful abstract work, and zen influenced representational work. This watercolor and gouache is 18 x 24 inches, and is lovely. Never framed or exposed to light, it is available for less than a quality dinner for two with a nice bottle of wine might set you back. And it’s guaranteed to put a spring in your step! #spring2021 #americanart #1970sart #watercolor #hudsonny

Spring! The garden is stirring...with a Carl Holty (1900-1973) oil on masonite of a house, trees and Spring-ish foliage, 32 x 48, circa 1947. #carlholty #americanart #americanartist #geometricabstraction

Spring has sprung! Below freezing when I awoke. Climbing to 60 when I go on my walk tonight. Helloooooo, Equinox. We have lots of superb spring-ish work to brighten any day, palette, and wall. I’ll post a bunch over the next few days as we settle into Mother Nature’s annual refresh. #nellblaine #springhassprung #hudsonny #hudsonnyart #americanart #americanpainter #stilllifepainting

Women’s History Month continues with an excellent work by the innovative (and still somewhat misunderstood and under appreciated) Nancy Graves (1939-1995). Graves was a painter, sculptor, film maker and conceptual creationist of the highest order. She passed at 54 leaving behind a legacy that is just now being brought in line with her time, place, and immense contributions to the art historical canon. A great place to start is the @nancygravesfoundation if you want to learn about a stealth giant who was gone too soon. Our work Fracture I (1982) is a 36 x 20 oil exhibited at M. Knoedler in Zurich (Dec 82-Jan 83). Great painting, and almost as cool as her red boots! #nancygraves #nancygravesartist #nancygravesfoundation #womenshistorymonth2021 #americanart #americanartist #womenartists #hudsonny
