Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River urges you to please watch for turtles! They are very active this time of year and can often be seen crossing roadwa...ys. Despite millions of years of evolution their shells offer them little protection against vehicle strikes, which are a major cause of mortality. If you see a turtle crossing the road and wish to help, please: Slow down and find a safe place to pull over. Use both hands to pick it up and move it off the road in the direction it was heading. Do not pick them up by the tail as you could damage their vertebrae. In the case of a snapping turtle you can grab them by the back of the shell or use a car mat or shovel to help them across. And be careful, snapping turtles can bite! #UpperDelaware #SnappingTurtles #Turtles
