COVID-19 is challenging us all at every turn. From forcing social separation at a time when traditionally we look forward to gathering with family and friends to increased worry about our health and the health of our loved ones, the stress is very real, and the surge of COVID-19 cases at what’s dubbed the most wonderful time of the year presents an added layer of pressure. Combine all this with winter, when the days are shorter and darker and temperatures are frigid, you ma...y find you or those you love are dealing with seasonal depression. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a form of depression that affects approximately 500,000 people every winter in the US. Fear and anxiety around COVID-19 and SAD is not something to take lightly. There are warning signs and steps to take to get help should you or a loved one need support to cope. Connecting with others, taking breaks and avoiding social media are just a few ways to help your mental health. Our team responded to 491 calls in November. Sickness was the most common reason for calls (63), followed by falls (56), breathing problems (33), traffic incidents (26) and unconsciousness/fainting (26). Responses were slightly higher for women (53%) than men (47%). The age group most called for was 70+ (46%), followed by 40-69 (33%), 20-39 (15%) and younger than 20 (6%). Ready. Willing. Able.

Falls were the most common reason for calls (61), followed by sickness (53), unconsciousness/fainting (25), breathing problems (22) and traffic incidents (19). Responses were slightly higher for women (55%) than men (45%). The age group most called for was 70+ (46%), followed by 40-69 (31%), 20-39 (16%) and younger than 20 (7%). Ready. Willing. Able.
