The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office has issued a travel advisory for Tioga County as of 7:00 AM today due to the ongoing snowstorm. Snowfall will continue through... this evening with periods of very heavy snowfall. All unnecessary travel should be postponed pending improved weather and road conditions to allow road crews to safely handle snow removal. If you must travel, use extreme caution and plan accordingly allowing extra time. Stay tuned to local media outlets or NOAA radio for weather updates.

On Tuesday, December 29th at approximately 2:30 PM, the Candor Fire Department was dispatched to assist Candor EMS with a lift assist at a residence. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male victim with non-life-threatening injuries who had fallen and slid down an ice and snow-covered embankment adjacent to the side of his house. He had come to rest just short of sliding onto a thinly ice-covered pond. Medical personnel provided by the Town of Owego were on-scene attending ...to the patient for Candor EMS, who were on another call in Candor. Due to the location of the victim, it was determined that special equipment was needed to move the victim to safety. Candor Fire asked for their rescue truck to respond to the scene. The victim had to be brought back up the same embankment he slid down. Rescuing the victim by going over the pond would have been the quickest route, but it was determined the ice was not thick enough for rescue personnel to walk on. Fire personnel utilized their low angle rope rescue equipment to perform this task. The victim was placed in a rescue basket called a Stokes and a combination of anchor points, multiple ropes, and hardware including specialized pulleys and devices were used to extricate the victim. Once the victim was lifted to safe ground, we continued to use the same rope rescue equipment to assist in carrying the victim to the ambulance since our route of travel was covered in ice and snow. The Candor Fire Department recently acquired this rope rescue equipment and has done several specialized training sessions on how to use it. Having this equipment along with continued training has greatly improved the abilities of our fire department. All unnecessary travel should be postponed pending improved weather and road conditions to allow road crews to safely handle snow removal.
