Today I had to let my Riley Saoirse go to the Rainbow Bridge. Out of all the animals I've had in my life, letting Riley go was the hardest. There was just something extra special about Riley. He was so loving, and such a good, happy boy and companion. He could be so funny, too. He's the only dog I've had who loved to watch TV, and he had his favorite shows. He was nuts about Candace on HGTV. Every time he'd hear the first couple bars of the music from her show, he'd fly from ...wherever he was and sit in front the TV; he wouldn't move until a commercial came on, then he'd be right back after the commercial. If I turned the TV off, he'd look at the remote, then me, then the TV, several times, like, 'Hey Mom! Put the TV back on!' It was so sad that, after Riley got diabetes and the associated cataracts caused him to lose his sight, he couldn't watch TV anymore, though I always left it on for him anyway. Getting glaucoma didn't help. But those were both under control with his insulin, eye drops, and the homemade dog food I made for him; he was doing great and was such a trooper through it all. Riley was never a barker, but when that food came out, he sure let me know he wanted it, lol. In October 2019 he started showing the signs of degenerative myelopathy, a horrible, horrible disease. Riley lasted a lot longer than some dogs do, and I thank God DM isn't painful or I'd have had to let him go sooner. He'd gotten a lot less able to walk over the last month, was having trouble being able to potty, and as DM is a progressive disease, the next part of it would have been terrible to let him go through. I wasn't going to let my dog have no dignity and no quality of life, so I made the very hard decision to let Riley go in peace and love. We had 13.5 good years and I will miss him every day of my life.
