Join Triple Canopy and Spectacle for And Besides, It's True: A screening with Spectacle Theater, featuring Paige K. B. & Tiffany Sia, an evening devoted to disinformation and rumor. The event will begin with a screening of Nathalie Magnan’s 1996 short film ‘Il n’y a pas de fumée sans feu, et en plus c’est vrai!’ (There’s No Smoke without Fire, and Besides, It’s True!), a dense refraction of the information landscape of the time that provides a portrait of viral hearsay throu...ghout human history. Following Magnan’s film, artists Paige K. B. and Tiffany Sia will each give presentations of found footage and media clips, tracing the distribution of psy-ops, censored messages, and subversive appeals through such varied networks as Twitter Live and The David Letterman Show. K. B. will consider the comedic angle of American manifestations of LARPing as reality, from Andy Kaufman to QAnon; Sia will examine the Rashomoning of Hong Kong protest footage and its legal implications. The event will conclude with a discussion between K. B., Sia, Triple Canopy senior editor Matthew Shen Goodman, and Spectacle volunteer Steve Macfarlane. https://bit.ly/2PW3ebB

I wanted to encourage people to name rather than minimize the harm done to them by the welfare stateand not to appeal to the state for recognition or redress. Rather than make Black suffering legible to a powerful audience (as if greater awareness has, historically, abated this suffering), I wanted to ask them to acknowledge the harm, for the sake of our sanity and to expand what can be named as harmful. The designer’s intent manifests in the balancing of program and expression, system and sense; it is in the detailed work of forming and adjusting letters in accordance with the characteristics and practices of readers. Read Bo-Won Keum on individuality versus technocracy in design. Keum, Triple Canopy’s associate designer, focuses on the Bauhaus master Joost Schmidt, whose work prefigured current discussions about the form and function of design in the digital age and inspired our current issue’s visual identity. https://bit.ly/2NYCcPG
