Cantori New York 09.05.2021

We’re thrilled to announce the release of our newest studio recording: THE ELEMENTS, by New York composer Philip Lasser. LISTEN NOW: https://www.cantorinewyork.com/the-elements A Cantori commission, Lasser’s poignant cycle sets American anti-war poetry by e.e. cummings, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. We presented its world premiere in 2018 in a special program honoring the centenary of the armistice that ended World War I.... Lasser is a professor at Juilliard and director of the EAMA-Nadia Boulanger Institute in Paris. His prolific works have been commissioned and performed by ensembles around the world. THE ELEMENTS, written for choral ensemble and cello duet, was directed by our Artistic Director Mark Shapiro (currently celebrating his 30th season with Cantori!) and features cellists Ari Evan and Philip Sheegog.

Have you saved the date?? Join us THIS THURSDAY, February 11 at 7 pm, for the next installment of CANTORI/QUASI, our monthly live-streamed salon presenting music and conversation with composers, scholars and Artistic Director Mark Shapiro. This special Valentine’s program showcases The Best-Beloved by New York composer Chris DeBlasio. Critical theorist Dr. Jeremy Cohan, winner of an NYU Teaching Award, joins us to discuss the texts. DeBlasio, lost to AIDS in 1993 at age 34, w...as best known for his songs and song cycles. Among his most famous works is his song Walt Whitman in 1989, setting poetry by Perry Brass; it’s published in the AIDS Quilt Songbook, a collaborative collection started in 1992, intended to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A singer as well as a composer, DeBlasio attended New York University and the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to songs, he also wrote music for plays, musical theater, operettas and liturgical music. Composer John Corigliano, a former teacher, remembered him to The New York Times as just a very terrific young man who was in love with music. DeBlasio wrote The Best-Beloved in 1990. By turns lyrical and fierce, this rarely heard four-part cycle explores our sources of strength in hard times, culminating in a glorious affirmation: My beloved is mine, and I am his. The Best-Beloved was a featured work on Cantori's first-ever CD, Echoes and Shadows (PGM Recordings). Register below! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cantoriquasi-the-best-beloved-
