Our council mentioned. Woot!

Our Lady of the Lakes 05.05.2021

Today is Good Friday, on which we remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The Temple Guards, guided by Judas, arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, for which Judas received 30 pieces of silver. Jesus was brought to the house of Annas, the father-in-law of the high priest, Caiaphas. There he was interrogated with little result and sent bound to Caiaphas where the Sanhedrin had assembled. Conflicting testimony against Jesus was brought forth by ...Continue reading

Today is Holy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles as described in the gospels. Today the chrism Mass is celebrated in each diocese. Usually held in the diocese's cathedral, in this Mass the holy oils are blessed by the bishop, consisting of the chrism, oil of the sick, and oil of catechumens. The oil of the catechumens and chrism are to be used on the coming Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil, for the baptism and confirmation of thos...e entering the church. Another name for today is Maundy Thursday. Maundy is the religious rite of Washing of the Feet. The gospels mention Jesus performing this act. Specifically, in John 13:1417, Jesus instructed "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."

Our Council's 2021 Lenten Fish Fry is over and it was an amazing success thanks to our many loyal supporters and our team of volunteers. So here’s a great big "THANK YOU" to you all from our devoted Fish Fry Crew! We served well over 1300 meals over the past six Fridays, all of them made hot and fresh to order, and ready for pick-up ON TIME. The challenges posed by the lingering effects of the pandemic could not deter us from helping our parishioners fulfill their Lenten obli...gations with high-quality, affordable, varied, and (dare we say) delicious fish meals every Friday. We are already planning for Fish Fry 2022, when we expect to re-open our dining room, but maintain aspects of the current pre-ordering system. This way whether you are eating-in or taking out, your meal will be ready when you want it, without any long waits. In the coming weeks we will announce the charities and causes that will benefit from our Fish Fry proceeds. We don't do our Fish Fry primarily as a fundraiser, and that's why we can keep our prices low. (Where else can you get a big order of Lobster Mac & Cheese or 3 mahi-mahi tacos & chips for only $12?) But whatever small profit we do make is donated to worthy charities serving our area. Use the comments below to tell us how we did, what you liked, and what you'd like to see next year. So thanks again for all of your support, and we hope to see you all again next year!

Today is Palm Sunday, the feast commemorating Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It marks the first day of Holy Week, which is the last week of Lent that precedes the arrival of Easter. The Gospels tell us that Jesus rode on a donkey into Jerusalem. The celebrating people there lavished praise upon him by laying down their cloaks and palms or small branches of trees in front of him, saying "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; We bless you from the house of the Lord," which is taken from Psalm 118:25-26. Since 1970, Palm Sunday has coincided with Passion Sunday, and the liturgy of the Passion of the Christ is the focus of today's Mass. This is why the Catholic Church's full name for today's feast is "Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord."

Join us in congratulating these thirteen Catholic gentlemen who joined our honored Order and our Council at the exemplification we held yesterday: Raul Benitez Bryan Crecco Owen Deneny... Glenn Flanagan Bill Mackin Shawn Martin Liam McManus Michael McManus Joseph R. Minello Louis Noble Anthony Rooney Eric Shields Len Shields Our in-house degree team conducted a new exemplification, which focuses on the history and principles of our Order, and in which all three degrees are conferred in a single ceremony. We were informed by the Chairman of the Board of District Deputies that our Council was the first in the Westchester-Putnam Conference, and indeed the entire State of New York, to have conducted the new exemplification. Please welcome these newest Third Degree members and encourage them to take an active part in our Council's many activities and causes.

"While America’s political formation owes much to the British tradition of parliamentary debate and religious liberty, of course, the country’s character also owes a great deal to the adventurous spirit of Columbus, as well as the tradition of human rights, shaped in Europe, that Columbus’ critics now use to attack him." "Critics miss this because they see Columbus and Western civilization as evil intrusions into the New World. Yet America would not exist today without Columbus and the spirit he passed on. Depending for their security and prosperity on the very civilization they claim to indict, today’s critics manipulate the Western traditions of intellectual dissent and free speech to smear a man whose daring was the first step in bringing these traditions to the New World."
