Catskill Park Trail Conditions 12-4-20: Light snow could be headed our way this weekend, especially at the higher elevations of the Catskills. Colder temperatur...es and very heavy rain this past week will make trails icy at higher elevations and very wet at lower elevations. Trails will be very wet and there may be some flooding at lower elevations. At higher elevations, expect ice on trails due to heavy rain that fell on Monday and overnight temperatures below freezing. A chance of snow is predicted Friday night into Saturday for parts of the region. Check trail maps before heading out on a hike for any stream crossings, and consider alternate trails until water levels have a chance to lessen. Micro spikes or crampons are a necessity for hiking safely at higher elevations this weekend. Thinking in terms of winter footwear (waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, micro spikes or another foot traction device) is a good idea, both for this weekend and for upcoming fall and winter weekends. Sunsets this weekend will be at about 4:28pm, and sunrises will be at 7:04am. You can make a difference. A gift of $150 allows us to keep the lights on in the Platte Clove Cabin so artists can continue to work on rainy days. You can make a contribution to our Giving Tuesday campaign here: https://catskillcenter.org/givingtuesday

How many ways can we measure the Catskills? We could look to the mountain peaks, vibrant main streets, clean and clear streams, cultural events, dedicated volunteers, miles of trails...there is no single way to measure what the Catskills mean to each of us. The Catskills inspire in so many ways. That inspiration deserves our appreciation and support. The Catskill Center is dedicated to protecting the Catskills, ensuring that our natural and cultural resources will be preserve...d and our communities will thrive at the same time. We work hard so that not only can we enjoy the Catskills, but they will be here for our children’s children and beyond. This Tuesday is #GivingTuesday, a global day of generosity where we give back to the people, places and organizations that continue to transform our world for the better. On December 1, we ask that you give back to the Catskills, so they can continue to inspire future generations. So we can preserve critically important lands and habitats, ensure our communities thrive, and provide tens of thousands of visitors each year with a connection to a region unlike any other in the world.

It's been a tough year, but we've all seen firsthand how the arts can help us process our world and provide necessary moments of beauty and joy. Here is Catskil...ls Visitor Center Director Katie Palm reflecting on the importance of the Platte Clove Artist-In-Residency program: "With news of a Coronavirus vaccine in the near future, the Catskill Center hopes to once again open the doors for our Platte Clove Artist in Residence program in 2021. Over the last two decades, artists have been inspired by the rustic cabin and surrounding environment to create new work, explore unknown techniques, complete movies and manuscripts. After their one-week residency, artists have gone on to display their cabin completed art in 1-person shows at local galleries, published books, and won film awards." See more
