My dad was an addict. He died from an overdose in 2018. I once got mad at him when his food stamp card was denied and I had to cover his groceries. It wasn’t a...bout the money. I gave him a hard time when he broke my glass measuring cup. It wasn’t about the cup. He commented on a new haircut and I was enraged because he’d already seen it and I assumed he was too drunk to remember. It wasn’t about my hair. I drove him from doctor to doctor, from rehab to rehab, but I was frequently short tempered. Visibly put out by what he required of me. It wasn’t about the time. He was homeless for many years. He used to stand on corners with a sign and ask for whatever money or food people were willing to give. I loved him, but I was frequently embarrassed by him. I was mad about my childhood and what bled into my adulthood, and I found any way to take it out on him. He’s gone now and I’m not mad at him anymore. I’m mad at how much I let my inability to forgive him affect our relationship. Now he is free and I’m chained, weighed down by all the grace I couldn’t bear to give a person who so wholly was in need of it. Give forgiveness. YOU CAN HELP & MAKE A DIFFERENCE as a Peer Recovery Advocate! As a Peer Recovery Advocate, you draw from personal experience with substance use, and professiona...l training to provide non-clinical support services as identified in the patient's treatment or recovery plan.* What will you do? Your primary function is facilitating outreach with individual currently in a program or considering treatment. Utilizing your recovery expertise, professional training and lived experience, peers boost individuals' engagement in treatment and committed to recovery. CRPAs also connect patients to community-based recovery supports consistent with treatment, recovery, and discharge plans. Where will you work? Peers may work in a variety of settings including OASAS outpatient programs under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. You may also find work in hospital emergency departments and various home and community-based service settings as they become available across the state. Certified peers also provide support in court rooms for individuals working through criminal justice matters, or accompany individuals to doctors appointments if needed. How do you become certified? To pursue certification as a Recovery Peer Advocate, you must meet the following minimum requirements: Hold a high school diploma or have their GED and pass the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC-RC) exam; Complete 46 hours of required training (click the button below to sign up for required training with BIZ); Complete at least 500 hours of related volunteer or work experience; and Complete at least 25 hours of supervision by qualified supervisory staff After completing the 46 hours training in the required domains, you are eligible for a provisional certification (CPRA-P), valid for 2 years while you complete the remaining requirements for full certification. Upon completion of all required training and related work hours (paid or unpaid, candidates can apply for nonclinical peer positions and upgrade the full Recovery Peer Advocate Certification). To receive full certification, you must submit an application, and register for and pass the Peer Recovery exam. Your certification is valid for 3 years. The New York Certification Board is the only entity authorized by OASAS to oversee the training and certification of Certified Recovery Peer Advocates in New York State. *Language and information from NYS OASAS website.
