Since last month, we've been observing #MLKDay, the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, by collecting donations of books for children, youth, and adults to be donated to local shelters and jails. We've also be collecting non-perishable canned food items that will be donated to local food pantries. THANK YOU to everyone who donated so far! If you'd still like to contribute, today is the last day to donate using the links below:... Book Drive: https://a.co/80UZWXP Non-perishable Items: https://a.co/g8jDZZP

We continue to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth by highlighting influential Black American trailblazers in the field of science, academics, politics, human services and the arts. We hope you enjoy learning about and celebrating these inspiring Black leaders who have made a remarkable impact on the lives of children and families. Today we celebrate Marian Wright Edelman, the first Black woman to practice law in Mississippi and the founder and president emerita of the @ChildrensDef...enseFund (the nation’s first advocacy group devoted to children), fighting to make sure every child in America has what they need to thrive. Under her guidance, the organization has become the strongest voice for children’s and families’ rights. Marian Wright Edelman’s parents taught her and her siblings that neither poverty nor racism should stand in their way. For example, recognizing that Black children did not have access to public playgrounds or lunch counters, Marian’s father built a playground and canteen behind his church. He also built the Wright House for the Aged to provide a place for elderly Black Americans to live and receive care. After he died, Marian's mother carried on the tradition of serving others by continuing the operation of Wright House and taking in twelve foster children.

This year we continue our tradition of celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth by highlighting influential Black Americans who have and continue to be trailblazers in the field of science, academics, politics, human services and the arts. We hope you enjoy learning about and celebrating these inspiring Black leaders who have made a remarkable impact on the lives of children, families and communities that we serve. Today we celebrate Amanda Gorman. Wordsmith, change-maker, youngest i...naugural poet in U.S. history, and award-winning writer. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she began writing at a young age. Since then her words have won her invitations to the Obama White House and to perform for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Al Gore, Secretary Hillary Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, and others. On January 20, 2021, Amanda Gorman became the sixth and youngest poet, at age twenty-two, to deliver a poetry reading at a presidential inauguration, entitled The Hill We Climb. Her poem was a highlight of the event, eloquently capturing the unique challenges of the moment in US History. You can read that poem here: http://ow.ly/Iyrr50Dmefw
