"Policies as mundane as infrastructure and accessibility represent the next frontier in our struggle. The fight for fairness and equity lives in our tax, social and urban policies, perhaps even more than in our words and rhetoric. While not glamorous, these policies offer communities of color the access to education and economic opportunity to lift themselves up, the benefits of which pave a path to higher economic status and build political power that is desperately lacking." http://ow.ly/Dxsv50BYXVT

It is especially evident now, but evident always, that Rochester is not the just and equitable city we should expect and that we require. The horror of the death of Daniel Prude, and the shocking and cruel manner by which it was revealed to us, demonstrates that we continue to live in two Rochesters; one a city of the fortunate and privileged, and one a city of the ostracized and oppressed. This cannot continue. All of us must commit ourselves to building a fair, tolerant, and just city. It is time for us to reimagine a Rochester that is shaped and shared equally and joyfully by all of its citizens. We do not yet have that Rochester, and we stand with all those who will work to make that city real. -The Community Design Center Rochester Board & Staff
"The anthropologist Marc Augé gave the name non-place to the escalating homogeneity of urban spaces. In non-places, history, identity, and human relation are not on offer. Non-places used to be relegated to the fringes of cities in retail parks or airports, or contained inside shopping malls. But they have spread. Everywhere looks like everywhere else and, as a result, anywhere feels like nowhere in particular." http://ow.ly/mu4N50Bb826
