MY LETTER TO THE NYTimes THIS MORNING. To the Editor: In the midst of the massive news coverage this past week on the assault on the Capital, and the mental health or lack thereof- of our current president, there has been almost no mention of the mental health of our Senators, members of Congress and their staffs, and the psychological after-effects of the ordeal they experienced on January 6th. They have endured what many of our school children have unfortunately had... to incorporate into everyday life. Shelter in place. Hide under desks. Block doorways. Contact loved ones. Hope that help is on the way. Don’t feel safe in a place assumed to be safe. The aftermath of trauma is powerful. The term PSTD is now part of our common vernacular. Yet, high functioning people who hold positions of great responsibility, know how to overperform. They know how to over-ride trauma and how to power forward. We witnessed this at 8 p.m. that night when both the House and Senate re-convened and these brave men and women walked back into the scene of the crime within hours of its occurrence. They had business to do and they did it. Their strength and resilience were remarkable. I hope and pray that these people will now take time to process the enormity of the trauma they have endured and attend to their own psychological needs. In a country that is already in a state of trauma from the past four years, we need our leaders to be as psychologically stable as possible. If we’ve learned anything from this presidency, it certainly should be this.
