As we reflect on this extraordinary year, we thank you -- the CBA community -- for your curiosity and commitment to our mission. Although we weren't able to gather in person, our work pressed on as we deepened current programming and forged new opportunities to connect. . CBA's offices will be closed from December 24 through January 3 as we recharge and prepare for a year filled with inspiring new work and ongoing conversations across disciplines. . Until then, from all of us... at The Center, here's wishing you and your loved ones a very happy, healthy holiday season. . Fellow Highlight // Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener (CBA '21) . At CBA, Mitchell and Riener are working with ballet and contemporary dancers on improvisational structures, algorithmic scores, and game-based ideas. They are documenting the work using analog tools, written descriptions, and digital technologies, generating an archive of materials and experiences that can be accessed and arranged in physical or digital space. . Mitchell and Riener have created dances together since 2010. After working in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, they began developing adaptive systems for choreography in response to shifting environments. Their work incorporates technology and digital strategies from a perspective that questions the dominance of new media in performance.
Fellow Highlight // Alex Reuben (CBA '21) . Filmmaker Alex Reuben’s CBA Fellowship project is based upon the short story "Trumpet Voluntary" by James Lasdun. It explores ideas around cognitive, choreographic poetics for a synchronized film about synchronization. (Curious? Join CBA and New York Institute for the Humanities on November 20 for a conversation between the two: http://ow.ly/wBhG50Cm1zl) . Reuben has a background as a DJ and in art and design. He made three choreo-geographic movies for cinema, each characterized by improvisation, sound, and social cognition.
November 20 at 1pm EST: Join CBA and the New York Institute for the Humanities on Zoom for "A Conversation with Alex Reuben and James Lasdun." . Filmmaker Alex Reuben (CBA '21) is working on a film, with dance, based on James Lasdun's 1989 short story "Trumpet Voluntary". Reuben and Lasdun come together to discuss dance, film and why Lasdun's story feels so relevant today. This event is co-presented with the New York Institute for the Humanities.
Have you completed your CBA Fellowship application? All materials must be submitted by Monday, November 2 at 9am EST. http://ow.ly/TTNA50C7lZ1
