Ms. Porter is a current NYC Department of Education executive superintendent for the Bronx and will officially become chancellor on March 15th. Ms. Porter started her career as a youth organizer in Highbridge and went on to join the #DOE as a teacher (and founder) at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice. She eventually served as principal at that school for 18 years. As a Bronx superintendent of school districts 7-12 and New Visions Affinity schools since 2018, she has overseen the largest gains in graduation rates of any borough.
The pandemic has widened the gap between Black-owned businesses and their white counterparts. Black-owned businesses declined by 41% between February and April 2020, compared with a 17% decline among White-owned businesses. Recent research shows that Black Americans’ knowledge of saving and investing significantly lags behind whites. As of January 2021, the unemployment rate for Black Americans was at 9.2% compared to 5.7% for white Americans.
The LeBron James Family Foundation announced the opening of a venue called House Three Thirty, which will provide #financialliteracy advice, job training, and recreational activities for Akron youth. The hub will join other major endeavors Lebron has started in Akron, including most prominently his I Promise School in 2018 and his I Promise Village transitional family housing in 2019. Ariel Investments is partnering with JPMorgan Chase to launch an investment arm to help fund minority-owned businesses across the U.S. Ariel Alternatives has secured $200 million in initial funding from JPMorgan Chase. The initiative called Project Black aims to fill a massive diversity gap in the corporate America supply chain. Fortune 500 companies spend just 2% annually on minority-owned suppliers.
