By telling over their story and message, and reflecting on their theme, we spread the message throughout the year and make it part of our daily life. ~~ Shabbat Shalom! ~~ Friday, Aug 9, 2019 ~ 8 Av, 5779 NYC CANDLE LIGHTING: 7:44 pm... Torah Reading: Devarim (Deuteronomy 1:1 - 3:22) ~ Advice for Life ~ PURPOSE When looking for purpose in your day-to-day life, leave the comfort of your surroundings at least twice a week to help others in need. Adapted from the correspondence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Igros Kodesh vol 29, pg 67 ~~ ~~ ~~ Fast of Tishah B'Av Begins Saturday Eve Because of the holiness of Shabbat, the Fast of the Ninth of Av mourning destruction of the Temple and the exile of Israel is postponed to after Shabbat. The fast begins Saturday evening at sunset, and continues through Sunday, Av 10, till nightfall. Finish eating by sunset. After nightfall say, "Blessed is He who distinguishes between the holy and the mundane." No Havdalah tonight, but light a candle and recite the fire blessing. Havdalah is recited after the fast (omitting the candle and incense blessings). "Eichah"--the Book of Lamentations--is read Saturday night in the synagogue after evening prayers. For approximately 25 hours--from sundown on Saturday to nightfall Sunday evening--we abstain from eating and drinking, bathing, the wearing of leather footwear, and marital relations. It is customary to sit on the floor or a low seat until after mid-day. Torah study is restricted to laws of mourning, passages describing the destruction of the Temple, and the like. The tefillin are worn only during the afternoon Minchah prayers. ~~ ~~ ! Have a great, peaceful and inspiring Shabbat!

~~ Shabbat Shalom! ~~ Friday, July 12, 2019 ~ 9 Tammuz, 5779 NYC CANDLE LIGHTING: 8:09 pm... Torah Reading: Chukat (Numbers 19:1 - 22:1) ~ Advice for Life ~ Jewish Traditions Study the history of the universe, and you will discover that there are those nations that prospered and others that did not. Explore the history of the Jewish nation, and you will find that their continued existence, is not the result of the language they spoke, or the land they lived in, but due to Jewish traditions and precepts that they observed. Those who have wandered away from the Jewish traditions have either disappeared or ultimately returned to their roots. Adapted from the correspondence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Igros Kodesh vol 29, pg 53 ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ Have a great, peaceful and inspiring Shabbat.
