Buffalo Nickels President Theodore Roosevelt was committed to beautifying American coinage, and because of his lobbying, new gold coins designed by Augustus St. Gaudens were introduced in 1909. Even though William Howard Taft had taken office, in 1912, Roosevelt’s numismatic legacy was continued: An Indian-head design by James Earle Fraser, intended for the cent, was chosen for placement on the nickel. Production of these coins, whose obverse mimicked Indian-head $2....50 and $5 gold pieces, began in February 1913, and they were introduced to the public on March 4th. In response to rapid wear, several modifications to the coin were made immediately, leading to two distinct types of 1913 nickels. The coins, which were composed of copper and nickel, were struck until 1938 when they were replaced by the Jefferson 5-cent piece designed by Felix Schlag.
