Champion BMX 14.01.2021

It’s certainly no surprise that people can’t remain decent; and comments have been made about Champion BMX playing victim and sharing fake news about our choosing to close. We think people forget what we do every day in our work lives. Since COVID started; we have been in a State of Emergency and Margaret has been on call 24 hours a day. Rick is always at risk for COVID during his shifts and we are concerned that he may be exposed to COVID. For the track; we have worked ver...y hard over the past few months with the other Track Operators in NY to present opening plans. We have shared everything we learned, and tried to move things along as quickly as possible. As health care workers and essential employees; we had no problems developing infection control guidelines and working with NY State to move forward with plans for social distancing and racing in NY. We asked for volunteers to assist with track grooming to re-open and no one (edited except Dentons & Caleb) volunteered. Then we heard many families weren’t racing on Sundays. Many of the people complaining and commenting about the fake news have never picked up a rake or shovel at Champion and have no idea what it takes to groom our track or have volunteered at the track. Whether you support the Governor’s plans or not; Margaret works for NY state and has to support the Governor’s guidance and executive orders. We have been given specific guidance regarding events being held within our region whether it be a practice or race. Reading posts and watching the BMX community race has been quite eye opening and in truth, exactly what we thought would happen; has happened; riders are rude; disrespectful and do not understand the rules and do not seem to care if they are putting the Track Operators at risk. We heard rumors of tracks running practices during Phase I which gave BMX a bad name. It’s been an uphill battle trying to let the Governor’s office know that not all BMX tracks operate the same way. We do not want to deal with the risk of fines that comes along with telling riders that they cannot attend events at our track because they do not reside in the Southern Tier of NY or because they live outside of NY. In addition, we do not want to risk being fined for those who chose to travel to states who are on the travel restricted lists and want to travel to the track which happens to be our place of business. We discussed all of this with USABMX and asked them to discuss it with the Empire State Development Council. The negative comments and drama that surround the BMX communities and tracks are a testament to why we are not opening; it’s a shame and it’s during the Pandemic that you realize what is truly important. We have enough to worry about with COVID on a daily basis. See more

Champion BMX is going to remain closed for the 2020 racing season. USABMX sent all NY riders the announcement that the NYS series is cancelled. We were ready to open earlier this season and then a sudden change from NY State based on another track's re-opening plans left all NY tracks in limbo. We wish everyone well, and pray that you and your families remain healthy.

Hello rider families: We hope that you are well and have been safe during these crazy times. New York State has been leading the way in the fight against the Corona Virus. The safety of NYers and our rider families is a priority. We are faced with balancing that safety and the sustainability of our beloved tracks and facilities within the constraints of NY State mandates and CDC Guidelines. ... We have not posted on Social Media or on our website, not because we had nothing to say or were doing nothing, but because the rules, mandates and guidelines change almost constantly. Cycling, specifically BMX racing, was not included in any documentation, guidelines, or opening phases until very recently. At this time, we are asking for your continued patience. We have put protocols in place to meet NY State’s mandates and CDC’s Guidelines, but it remains unclear as to what capacity we will be permitted to race. Our plan is to open but we are waiting for clarification from the state and USABMX. We have recently seen negative posts on Social Media. While we understand frustration and respect individual rights to voice opinions, we are personally asking that any posts or correspondence pertaining to BMX racing, the restrictions on racing, and Champion BMX specifically, be done in a positive, respectful and constructive way. We will be publishing our protocol for being at the track as well as any specific information regarding racing and the NY race series shortly. We very much look forward to seeing you at the track! We will race again! Rick & Margaret Decker Track Operator/President Champion BMX
