We asked our dental team "what is the number tip you would give patients?" and this is what they said: Brushing Technique. There are two aspects to effective brushing of your teeth: One is the strength, and the other is technique. What we see often is 'vigorous brushing' - applying too much force, which results in damage to the enamel wear and even causes tooth recession. Harder/vigorous brushing isn't better; the key is to use a brushing technique that is effective and gen...tle at the same time. Choose a soft toothbrush to minimize gum irritation. As far as the size of the toothbrush, it is a matter of preference. If you have small teeth, a small toothbrush will cover your tooth and it sufficient. If you have larger teeth, the brush should ideally cover them as you brush. The best way to brush is by using a Modified Bass technique: a circular motion, angled at the gum line with a gentle flick downward to remove plaque and food particles. Of course, we always preach flossing, which removes food particles that, when left alone, will cause irritation and even infection. If you're not into flossing, using water-floss is best, between meals but especially before you go to bed. When you see the food particles that the floor floss dislodges, you'll be repeating this every day. If bleeding continues, come in for a cleaning as brushing and flossing alone can't efficiently get under the gums or remove food particles and plaque.

An interesting and recent study about the possible relationship between gum disease and CV (cardiovascular) disease. Read the article, study and my comments.

There are some things in life that shouldn't be rushed; like telling someone "I love you" being kind and helpful to someone who needs your help...AND taking care of your mind and body, and YES, your teeth. It pains me (literally) to treat a patient that was tempted by "an advertised low-price special" and is now in pain. There are some things that can't be rushed, like a detailed dental cleaning by an experienced and methodical hygienist that takes an average of 45 minutes!... When your waiting room is filled with "specials" you have no choice but to rush. And when you rush, you're likely to miss something that is not so obvious. Benjamin Franklin's quote has proven itself time and time again and I'm sure you've experienced it at some point in your life as well. I also love the Carpenter's Rule: Measure Twice, Cut Once. Our $99 cleaning for new and uninsured patients, includes 45 minutes of thorough cleaning, 4-bite x-rays, and my personal and unrushed exam. Please share this post with your friends and family and invite them to experience our no-wait and no-pain dentistry.

My patients provide me the unique joy of loving what I do. And once in a while one of them shares their satisfaction with the world which makes me even more joyful and proud - for having loyal patients who take the time to share.

Five questions about dentistry every patient asks and five very honest answers.

So your bags are packed, passport and money tucked safely away and you're thinking about that drink at 33,000 feet. Enjoy and be safe. But, in the unlikely event that you experience a terrible toothache, watch this video for important tips. Remember, Dr. Pollak provides complimentary 2nd opinion on any dental procesures. If a dentist overseas recommends an invasive procedure, have them email your x-rays to us asap. Best tip for avoiding travel pain? (sorry, can't help with lo...ng TSA lines) -- make sure you're up to date on your dental cleaning and check ups. If you experience ANY discomfort, let us examine you before you leave. If you've ever experienced root-canal-type-pain on a flight (not an experience I recommend) you know that an ounce of prevention goes a long way. Don't ignore even mild pain and if you've not had a cleaning in over six months, get it done before you leave - an exam is part of your cleaning and with x-rays we can prevent a ruined vacation. Bon Voyage. See more

Your body is telling you something you shouldn't ignore! BLEEDING GUMS (when you brush or even spontaneously) often result from progressive gum disease that will lead to bone and tooth loss. Good News! You can address this issue by routine dental cleaning and daily flossing BUT if your gums bleed, come in for "deep cleaning" - our most intense, "under the gums" cleaning to relieve this condition. Bone loss is permanent and may even prevent you from getting implants! Come in for cleaning or consultation and share this post with your family and friends, they WILL thank you!
