Our #farms in #winter // : @abundanceacresfarm Maple season comes only once a year (as winter turns to spring), so work in the woods usually is done from fall into winter. Over the past few weeks, Chris has been implementing his vision for Sugar Bush Phase 3 (i.e., third mainline flowing into one 500-gallon bulk tank): running high-tensile wire, vacuum tubing, and mainline (sap) tubing. Next, lateral lines (smaller sap tubing) will be run out to previously identified c...lusters of maple trees and build a sap ladder over the logging trail so the sap will continue to flow without impeding our travel to the woods and back. Then, we'll make and install "drops" (short lengths of tubing that connect each tree to a lateral line), which is the last bit of work that can be done before the sap starts running and we actually tap (drill) the trees. This new line will increase sap collection by 600-800 taps (or 9,000-12,000 gallons of sap). And when we collect more sap, we make more yummy maple syrup! See more
