Genetics are not the sole determining factor in how your body is structured, how it feels, and how it moves. Not by a long shot! Consider genetics your diving board, your starting line. From there, how you do in the race is determined by your choices, your habits, and the myriad things that just happen to you - though I tend not to place faith in coincidences. Often our lowest lows, our biggest pains whether they express primarily as physical, mental, emotional or sp...iritual, are big opportunities for us to stop, look and listen. In the pause, we see we have options. A BIG factor in how you play the race is your decisions. In order to make more balancing decisions, you’ll need to make good friends with your own awareness and agency. These are like adding a jet-pack and compass to your healing journey! When I was in elementary school, my friends called me cheetah because I could run faster than everyone else, including all the boys I’ve always loved nature and animals. I textbooks ahead of curriculum, for fun, to learn more about rainforests, oceans, species, ecosystems. When I was in my early 20’s, I watched the documentary Cowspiracy and my jaw hit the floor: What I was eating was destroying this planet I loved so deeply with my whole heart. I became a vegetarian... overnight. I love David Attenborough’s docuseries about the natural world, because it makes me fall in love with Mamma Tierra all over again. I’m currently watching One Planet on Netflix and decided to take action with @world_wildlife in the following ways: 1. I donated to them. Their website and the information they provide is the bomb and that shit takes money to maintain! 2. I signed a couple of their petitions 3. I read their everyday action items which literally anyone can do, it comes down to mindfulness of your dietary and consumer choices and quite simple shifting of your habits. From a young age I found it strange that so many people refer to animals as being separate from humans. As in Yes, controlling the rate of deforestation is good for both people and animals. #duh Girlfriend, I don’t care how civilized you are on two shoe-shaped feet in your pretty dress and your tight hips from not sitting on the floor and squatting... YOU BELONG TO THE ANIMALS.... Your instincts are animalistic. Your preferences and desires too. Your attractions and repulsions, your appetites, your fears, your circadian and menstrual and life cycles all belong to the animal world. And it’s f*cking beautiful, powerful, if we can stop being so afraid of that fact. Let’s start rewilding right away Move your body like different animals. How does that change your sense of self, of what is possible? How does imagining your physical relation to other animals, which share your evolutionary line to differing degrees, change the way your mind works? Which animal(s) do you like to imitate best? Four Tips for Ageing Well in Your Body (and eliminating pain) 1. Adopt a balanced and varied movement diet 2. Move your body enjoyably everyday ... 3. Identify your sources of stress and their effects on your body, reducing where possible and have go-to ways to destress (ex. walking outdoors, meditation, breathwork, yoga, talking with a friend, exercise, hot bath) 4. Enjoy (honestly) the company you keep. A satisfying social life is linked to less overall pain. Notably more difficult now but we can still find ways. (Cont’d from 3 posts back) In my Oct 21st post, I spoke about the first two milestones we may reach as we awaken to the organismic intelligence of our bodies. The third milestone we may reach as we awaken to the organismic intelligence of our bodies can be summed up by this internal question: WHAT do I feel?... At the first milestone, we emphatically exclaimed I don’t feel! - a typical utterance of a 21st century civilized-out-of feeling state. In the second, we took a stand against numbness by determining, I WANT to feel! And this may have led many to extreme, too much too fast too soon movement modalities which eventually culminated in injuries. Now we arrive at the milestone of curiosity. This is where we begin to reassert the power that was taken away from us. By taking a look at and exploring what we feel, both emotionally and physically, in movement and in stillness, our intelligence gets on board. And knowledge really is power: when you feel for yourself, you’re less likely to put up with bullshit and abuse, because your body will tell you IMMEDIATELY that the situation is no good for you - and you’ll learn how to read those messages before they erupt in full-blown injury or chronic pain.
