Thank you again to EMCom, Inc. for donating to our Christmas Program for a 2nd year in a row! We are continuously honored and humbled by our community's response to our call for assistance for the families we serve. Our program in on track to provide more than 100 children with gifts this year, an increase of over over 30 children from last year because of the generous donations we have and continue to receive. Again, thank you EMCom, Inc. and all of our donors for allowing us to continue to provide assistance to families this holiday season.

The Child Advocacy Center of Cayuga County provides a multidisciplinary, trauma-informed, coordinated response to children and youth up to age 18 who have been victims of sexual assault and/or severe physical abuse. In September we began having the children being interviewed here leave a handprint on our canvas after their interview. This helps end their visit to the CAC on a positive note and helps them see there are other children who have been through what they are going t...hrough, and that they are not alone. The picture on the left is from September 3rd and the one on the right is from today, November 16th. Each hand (or hands in a few cases) represent one of our County’s children who are alleged victims of sexual assault or domestic violence that have come through our doors. You can do your part to help make children in our community safer and show your solidarity with victims. Below are some ways you can do your part in the prevention of child sexual abuse and support of the victims: 1. Attend one of our scheduled virtual trainings for Darkness to Light to learn how to identify and respond to child sexual abuse; 2. Familiarize yourself with how to report child sexual abuse by going to https://ocfs.ny.gov/main/cps/default.asp; 3. Teach your children the proper names for their body parts and encourage them to use them; 4. Be proactive and involved in your child’s use of technology; learn how to spot red flags and how to report them (www.cybertipline.com); 5. Set clear digital boundaries and develop a digital safety contract with your child; 6. Believe a child if they disclose they have been a victim of sexual abuse and report it immediately to law enforcement; 7. Reach out to the Child Advocacy Center of Cayuga County to learn more about how you can help child victims in our community. 315-253-9795 ext. 300

Infants whose mothers smoke during or after pregnancy are at greater risk of SIDS. Infants born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy are three times more likely to die of SIDS than those born to mothers who did not smoke during pregnancy. Exposure to passive smoke (sometimes called secondhand smoke) in the household also doubles a baby's risk of SIDS.

Babies should be kept warm during sleep, but not too warm. Studies show that an overheated baby is more likely to go into a deep sleep from which it is difficult to arouse. Some evidence indicates that increased SIDS risk is associated with excessive clothing or blankets and a higher temperature in the room.
