Hi everybody! Here are FIVE FUN FACTS ABOUT HALLOWEEN! 1. Skittles are the top Halloween candy! The bite-sized candies outranked M&M's, Snickers, and Reese's Cups, according to 11 years of sales data from CandyStore.com. 2. The most popular children's costumes are princesses and superheroes! Adults are most likely to dress as witches, according to the National Retail Federation. As for our pets? The most popular costume for dogs in 2019 was a pumpkin!... 3. The origin of the jack-0'lantern involves a folk legend concerning an Irish man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devil and therefore was not allowed into heaven or hell-so he spent his days roaming the Earth, carrying a lantern, and went by "Jack of the Lantern"! 4. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum! 5. Happy Birthday Mahalia Jackson! Mahalia Jackson was an American gospel singer. Possessing a contralto voice, she was referred to as "The Queen of Gospel". She became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist. She was described by entertainer Harry Belafonte as "the single most powerful black woman in the United States". She recorded 30 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, a...nd her 45 rpm records included a dozen "golds"million-sellers. "I sing God's music because it makes me feel free", Jackson once said about her choice of gospel, adding, "It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues." If you would like to learn more about this remarkable woman, check out one of these books from the library Children’s collection!
