We are getting ready to reopen the school for in-person education and we are thinking outside the box. In fact, we are thinking OUTSIDE! The CDC recommends moving classes outside when it is safe and possible. Outdoor spaces provide great ventilation, and lowers the risk of infection. Please help us build an outdoor classroom!

Enjoy nature. It’s good for us, and it has very low risk of spreading the virus, recommended Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Maybe a silver lining to Covid-19 and the steady stream of restrictions and changes to our daily lives is that more schools return to outdoor learning. Beyond controlling a pandemic, outdoor learning just might become more appreciated and more mainstream.

Our curriculum already includes significant outdoor time, that fosters a relationship with the natural world, encourages play and engages students in hands-on learning experiences that promote higher levels of thinking. As schools look towards the future, many are considering the implementation of more outdoor education.

Students wrote a unique version of the play, Pinocchio, in Italian, with the help of their teacher, Ms. Lili. The class spent many hours practicing the play, over weeks, before they finally performed Pinocchio for family and friends on stage. The performance was magnifico!

The Wowee Wildlife Program came to our school and brought an amazing entourage of animal friends for us to meet! During the educational program students were introduced to each animal, followed by its personal history and discussion of species, biome, habitat, diet and other points of interest. The children were excited and asked lots of great questions! Classes just finished a unit on biomes so this was the perfect culminating experience! During the interactive presentation the WOWEE Wildlife group focused on tropical rainforests and the animals that inhabit it. Children got to see and touch really cool animals and they also obtained valuable information about what individuals can do to conserve and protect our rainforests and the lives within it.

What happens when children start playing more with virtual objects, manipulating touch screens instead of blocks and books? Children need to engage with real objects, handling them, building with them, dropping them and throwing them. Play is not a specific activity, it’s an approach to learning, an engaged, fun, curious way of discovering your world, Dr. Tamis-LeMonda said.
