Please refer to the media release below tonight's update for more information about our continued COVID-19 response efforts. Total CURRENT Cases today: 42 New C...ases Today: 21 New Hospitalizations Today: 1 New Deaths Today: 0 Total # of COVID-19 Tests: 35,241 Total # of COVID-19 Positive Cases: 372 Total # of COVID-19 Antibody Tests: 3756 Total Positive Antibody Tests: 90 December 7, 2020 MEDIA RELEASE Cases of COVID-19 are climbing at a more rapid pace in Essex County than at any time since the pandemic began. As we experience more widespread transmission in many of our communities, we are starting to see the impact of Thanksgiving travel, gatherings, and other social events that are more common around the holidays. Household spread of COVID-19 can occur from close interactions of family members during the time when the virus is incubating, before symptoms begin. While this type of spread is harder to control, we are also seeing spread outside of households, and many of our cases are in individuals who we cannot clearly link to a known exposure. COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus that is circulating in our community, stated Linda Beers, Director of Public Health for the Essex County Health Department (ECHD). The best way to protect yourselves is to assume everyone is potentially positive, and take the appropriate precautions. Wear a face mask, remain 6 feet from others, wash hands frequently, avoid crowds and gatherings, and limit your close interactions with others as much as possible. Perhaps most importantly, please stay home if you aren’t feeling well, stressed Jessica Darney Buehler, Director of Health Promotion and Planning for ECHD. Symptoms of COVID-19 can appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus and may include: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea. Limit your contact with others even close family and friends and call your health care provider if you experience symptoms, Buehler notes. Take steps to self-isolate while you wait for medical appointments and/or testing, as this is one proven way to contain the virus. Today’s report of 21 cases since Friday, in townships throughout the county, includes school district, business, and worksite exposures, in addition to exposures and cases due to gatherings and small events. This is a reminder that we cannot let our guard down this pandemic is far from over, cautioned Shaun Gillilland, Chairman of the Essex County Board of Supervisors. The Essex County Health Department is working at capacity to reach every case and contact to complete the isolation and quarantine process, said Gillilland. You may hear you were exposed and have to wait a bit before someone from the health department reaches out. Please be patient and know that they are making calls as quickly as possible. As we work to mitigate the effects of this virus, we are asking our residents to pledge to protect their families by recommitting to the safety measures that we know are effective, Beers stated. If we want to ensure that our schools, businesses, and economy remain open, we all have a role to play. We know that no one is immune to COVID-19 and while our cases are remarkably low when in controlled environments, like schools or regulated worksites, we do know that children and families interact outside of those controlled environments. Let’s make those personal interactions as safe as possible. Questions about COVID-19 can be directed to the Essex County Health Department at 518-873-3500. Attention to everyone on my list Do you own an electric fireplace or one of the tv stand fireplaces? If you do I have a warning about them as an electrician now... in the last 3 years I have now fixed 3 burnt plugs for people due to the fireplaces overloading the plugs see the pictures below this. I just was at a guys place that told me he rarely uses it and "it wasn't on" he heard a crackle noise came out of the bedroom and saw something moving in the corner it was an electric flash , I wouldn't dare to guess what may have happened if he wasn't home( it was an electric fireplace tv stand) and on the cord it states always unplug when not in use! Anyhow these units draw 1500 watts that's all of your circuit capacity and for temporary use only and shouldn't be left on. So my advice to you is tell your friends and families about these and unplug them when your not using them and only use it when you are there to watch it! See more

Amidst all of the bad news we hear on a daily basis and the prospect of a long fall and winter season of limited social gathering and continued changes to our... normal routines, we wanted to share some heartwarming news out of Moriah today. This community rallied together to donate groceries and other supplies for residents of the Lee House Apartments and displaced fire victims enough to last everyone impacted more than 5 days, with more available for additional outreach. Catherine Sprague and her team at the Moriah Chamber of Commerce spearheaded this effort, with coordination from Town Supervisor Tom Scozzafava and representatives of the Essex County Health Department & Essex County Emergency Services (Krista Berger, Patty Bashaw, and Matthew Watts) assisting with the packaging and delivery of these items. It is amazing to see a caring community come together and support those in need. These are the stories that remind us how lucky we are to live in the North Country

Motorists should be alert for moose on roadways in the Adirondacks and surrounding areas at this time of year during peak moose activity. Bull moose, in particu...lar, will begin wandering the landscape looking for females. DEC urges motorists to be aware when traveling the Adirondacks during these months, as moose could cross a highway almost anywhere. Moose are large, dark-colored animals and can be difficult to see in low light conditions. Wildlife-vehicle collisions with these large animals can result in personal injuries and can even be fatal. When traveling in areas of the state where moose are present remember these tips: Moose are most active at dawn and dusk Obey speed limits and moose crossing signs SLOW DOWN during times of reduced visibility Do not approach moose along roadways Moose photo courtesy of Jeff Nadler

**News Release Included Below** Total CURRENT Cases today: 15 (1 hospitalized) New Cases Today: 7* ... New Hospitalizations Today: 0 New Deaths Today: 0 Total # of COVID-19 Tests: 22,069 Total # of COVID-19 Positive Cases: 231 Total # of COVID-19 Antibody Tests: 3,682 Total Positive Antibody Tests: 87 *Note: 5 out of the 7 cases are associated with the Lee House Apartments cluster News Release: Essex County Health Department is reporting 5 additional cases associated with the initial cluster of COVID-19 cases in residents of the Lee House Apartments in Port Henry; town of Moriah. This brings the total cases to 9. This cluster includes people that live within and outside the Lee House Apartments. Yesterday, ECHD and staff from the Essex County Office of Emergency Services offered a testing event from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. near the Lee House Apartments for residents and individuals known to be or potentially exposed. The five additional cases were identified from 38 individuals swabbed, with the NYS Wadsworth Laboratory processing and reporting results to the health department in under 24 hours. Two additional cases unrelated to the Lee House cluster were also reported to ECHD on Friday. The Health Department has spoken with all new cases today to issue isolation orders, conduct case investigations, and determine contacts that might be at risk of exposure, stated Linda Beers, Director of Public Health for the department. This uptick in cases we’re experiencing is not unique to Essex County and is an important reminder of how opportunistic this virus is when we let down our guard, cautioned Beers. We’re finding that even smaller, indoor family gatherings, really fuels the spread of this virus. As cold and flu season is upon us, it’s even more important than ever to closely follow mask wearing, social distancing, handwashing, and gathering guidelines and get a flu shot, urged Beers. Community members have expressed concern about perceived activity at the Lee House Apartments, after the Essex County Board of Supervisors suspended outside visitors to the building this past Sunday. We want to remind the community that many of the residents are not under an isolation or quarantine order based on our assessment and are free to come and go from the building. There are also several residents who receive essential medical and/or personal services, so there will still be some traffic in and out of the apartments, Beers noted. The Essex County Health Department is working closely with other county and regional departments and agencies, including Mountain Lake Services, Essex County Department of Social Services, Office for the Aging, Office of Emergency Services, North County Home Services, Fort Hudson Health System, and the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County to safely meet the needs of every Lee House resident, conduct well checks, deliver food, medication, and supplies, and conduct cleaning and sanitization for mitigation and containment purposes.
