Housing is a Human and Civil Right -- Keep Public Housing Public -- Accept our Activist Invite by Jennifer Hyman Under the aegis of the respected Dr. Lenora Fulani, Committee for Independent Community Action has been organized to fight the privatization of NYCHA. We oppose giving public housing away to developers. We support resident management of public housing developments. ... CICA has a team of dynamic activists for you to work with. Saundrea Coleman fought privatization through infill - and won! Russell Taylor is running for resident council president to insure access to services for the residents of his building. Mildred Martinez is fighting the RAD conversion of her NYCHA residence in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Jeanine Henderson fought to stop the deleterious effects of RAD conversions at Ocean Bay Houses, where promises were broken and many residents have been evicted. Samantha Isales is organizing her college student peers. Brenda Temple is advocating to stop food deserts in the Rockaways. We must fight gainst privatization including RAD and Blueprint. RAD and Blueprint will convert Section 9 housing to Section 8. Rent increases and evictions may occur. Section 3 - jobs for residents - will be continued to be ignored under Blueprint. Help us stop privatization and pave the way for tenant control of NYCHA housing! PARTICIPATE IN STOPPING PRIVATIZATION: HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO 1. If you live in NYCHA housing, let us know if your building is being privatized and you or others are involved in organizing against privatization. Write us at: [email protected] 2. Reply to [email protected] if you would like to participate in the fight against privatization.

In this photo. Zuri is carrying a sign, made by #FrancesGoldin. She was my agent for almost 20 years. She passed away about three weeks ago. She was an activist.... She spent her whole fighting for housing rights. And women’s rights. And the rights of all the humans who inhabit this planet. She believed in me long before I was convinced I had a book in me. She represented folks who were activists. And truth tellers. Mumia. And Dorothy Allison. She fought alongside/ made path for the work of Einstein and Robeson & Adrienne Rich. She was my friend. And today, my daughter carried a sign Frances made, in a protest in which she would have been marchinghad she working legs and a present breath. She taught me so much about being a radical activist. #FrancesGoldin. Google her. Read the Black writers she represented. I dare you to live half as much as she did. Google her to see mere glimpses of how she spent the last few years of her life. I miss her. But I know she made the best of the almost century that she had. And that gives me much fuel to fight on. I lift my hat to Frances/simultaneously raising my middle finger to the 1 percent. I raise my fist for Black lives. And remember those gone from us. Leaning harder into the lessons we continue to learn from the way they loved their lives. See more
