From the Commission: An Update and Notification to the Veteran's Day Service on November 11, 2020 To those concerned...... The City of Amsterdam will conduct an abbreviated Veteran's Day Service at the West End Memorial on Guy Park Avenue on 11/11 at 11 AM. **WEATHER PERMITTING** This will be held proudly in observance and celebration of our military Veterans. There will NOT be a Veteran's Day Parade this year due to the impact the virus has had on our daily living. Guest Speaker is 4th Ward Alderman (and Veteran) Steven Gomula. The City of Amsterdam Honors, Richard G. Snyder Richard was born in Hagaman on January 3, 1921. He was inducted into the United States Army Air Force in February 1943. He went to England in November of that year and served with the 55th Mustang group. In November 1945 he was sent to Kaufbeuren Germany as part of the army of occupation. Richard returned to the United States in February 1946 aboard the cruiser USS Augusta. After the war he married and moved to Wesleyan Avenue and raised a family of three sons. Richard worked for many years at ALCO in Schenectady. He passed away in 1967.

The City of Amsterdam is not encouraging Trick or Treating this year. Instead, please consider visiting the Halloween Drive Thru being held at Veteran’s Field at 1:00pm on Halloween. They will have 2,000 treat bags available. If you choose to do traditional Trick or Treating, please only visit *participating* houses (outside light will be on) on Halloween night, from 6:00pm-8:00pm, do so safely and respectfully, and follow the guidelines below: Trick or Treaters:... Wear a cloth face covering under your costume mask Keep a safe distance 6 feet apart Sanitize hands in between stops Treaters: Hand out candy with sanitized/gloved hands instead of letting children reach into the candy bowl Parents: Wipe down candy packets when you get home or let them sit a couple of days before opening. The Amsterdam Police Department will have extra patrols on duty the entire Halloween weekend.
