Did you know that deck collapses have increased by 20% since 2007? The good news is that deck failures are preventable. Using the proper structural connectors a...nd fasteners, as well as regular maintenance, is the secret to a safe, strong deck. We recommend that decks be inspected annually to ensure that all connections are still strong. Jim Mattison, Simpson Strong-Tie training specialist, walks you through the six warning signs of an unsafe deck and the ten critical connections that make your deck safe and strong. The weather is very dangerous out there and the roads are a sheet of ice. Some roads in Chemung County are closed to allow law enforcement to clear up all the a...ccidents, including Interstate 86 from Elmira to Chemung. DO NOT CALL 911 TO ASK WHERE THE SALT TRUCKS ARE! They all have been notified and are out. Only call 911 if an actual emergency exists. All the E911 Operators are extremely busy with priority calls. See more

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ELMIRA FIREFIGHTERS: If you are in a building on fire, leave immediately. Please, do not reenter the building for any reas...on. It's natural to want to reneter a building on fire to save something you love. However, the best intentions and smallest actions can have fatal results. The best course of action is to leave the building, do not reenter, and call 911 immediately so the Fire Department can respond as soon as possible. Seconds matter! GET OUT AND STAY OUT!! Remember, fires can expand and grow quickly. If you discover a fire inside your home or building, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE YOURSELF. You need to head for the exit and CLOSE the door to the fire room if possible. Do not open windows or other doors. Dial 911 immediately as soon as you are outside. Seconds matter, get the Fire Department on their way. GET OUT AND STAY OUT!!
