A message form the City Forester regarding the recently confirmed finding of the invasive Spotted Lantern Fly in the Fall Creek neighborhood: This message is to alert residents and visitors of the Fall Creek neighborhood of a recently confirmed finding of the non native invasive Spotted Lantern Fly in the Fall Creek neighborhood area (nearest the Ithaca Falls end). Spotted Lantern Fly is a non native insect that feeds on a wide range of trees, especially liking Tree of Heaven... (Ailanthus). In large populations they can cause damage to trees of multiple species in residential settings, but more importantly for this region, they are an economically damaging pests of vineyards and orchards. This infestation may be very small at this point, so your vigilance and assistance can help to protect the apple and wine industries in the Finger lakes area! Here is a link to a facts sheet: https://on.ny.gov/2TYcQBi and a FAQ sheet: https://on.ny.gov/364G4UA For now you can help in two ways... There will be NYS and USDA inspectors in the Fall Creek area looking for signs of the insects within the next few weeks.Cooperation from property owners to allow the inspectors to look around your yard (after you have been shown sufficient ID from the inspectors) is very helpful. Secondly, you can become familiar with the appearance of the egg masses and check around your yard and neighborhood for them. This is how the insects make it through the winter. If we can find and remove egg masses we can limit (or eliminate) this insect. This is a great activity for young students learning from home! The above link shows what the egg masses look like. They lay eggs on a wide variety of surfaces, including tree trunks, stone walls, metal surfaces, and even car bumpers. If you do find something that looks like an egg mass please contact [email protected] or alert Jeanne Grace, City Forester at (607) 272- 1718 or [email protected] Thank you for your assistance in keeping this invasive species at bay, and keeping our trees and vineyards safe!

A friendly reminder to turn your clocks back one hour this Sunday, November 1st! The IFD would like to also remind you that this is a great time to also test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and change their batteries if they are battery operated. Be safe everyone!

As local government and law enforcement leaders we are strongly discouraging attendance at any political rallies planned in downtown Ithaca for this weekend. Planned rallies have not applied for or received permission to hold a lawful assembly and we have serious concerns about potential violent conflict. City and County law enforcement officers will be on hand, but we cannot guarantee the safety of participants.... Our community has always prized the First Amendment right to free speech. Over the last several months we have demonstrated an understanding and willingness to allow even disruptive protests. Any acts of violence take away from the ability for movements to be heard and for conversations to be had. We are looking forward to more constructive conversations with community members moving forward. As the leaders of local government and law enforcement, we all feel that tempers are quickly spiraling out of control. We implore our community to please work to find other outlets for political expression and help us avoid a potentially tragic clash in the heart of our City.
