The Bioethics Program of Clarkson and Mount Sinai 02.04.2021

Current student, Jina Shah, passed this along: Subject: Book Review Query: "Corporatizing American Health Care" How has US health care transformed from bedside medicinea model of small practices and patient-focused careinto corporate medicine, which prioritizes profit and deals with patient care as billing codes? Dr. Robert W. Derlet, professor emeritus of emergency medicine at UC Davis, answers in his new book with Johns Hopkins University Press, Corporatizing American Hea...lth Care: How We Lost Our Health Care System. In the book, available February 2021, Derlet traces the progression of health care policy in the United States, mapping out how an individualized small cottage profession came to cost the United States over $3 trillion each year. Arguing that the US Congress is at the root of the problem, he describes how our government has failed to enact legislation to prevent corporate monopolies in the health care industry. Drawing on his decades as a practicing physician caring for thousands of patients, as well as his university and medical school teaching experience, Derlet delivers a clear, linear explanation of how this industry came to consume us. World Medical and Health Policy welcomes 800-1000 word book reviews on this book. Please contact Cynthia Golembeski ([email protected]) to review this book. World Medical & Health Policy is dedicated to the intersection of policy, politics, medicine, and public health. The Journal's objective is to help improve global health by broadly considering policy context, processes, outcomes, and influences. This call for book reviewers is open to students, health professionals, professional academics of all levels, and independent scholars. We welcome your ideas for books to review and we will gladly also help you find a book that matches your area of expertise.
