Mark 14:1-11 led by Brigitte Kahl

Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice 12.02.2021

The Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice (CLBSJ) invites people of all faiths and traditions to join us in a Lenten discipline of biblical detox, each Thursday night at 7:30pm eastern time. The first session will be led by Dr. Brigitte Kahl from Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Kahl is the author of Galatians Re-Imagined: Reading with the Eyes of the Vanquished (2010), and her work focuses on understanding the New Testament in the context of Roman Empire. She will lead us in an exploration of Mark 14:1-11, which appears in the lectionary at the end of Lent this year, and contains the often misused verse For you will always have the poor with you. Join us for a conversation between CLBSJ board chair, Nick Johnson, and Dr. Dong Hyeon Jeong!

Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice 09.01.2021

THIS THURSDAY: Dong Hyeon Jeong and Nicholas Johnson respond to supremacist use of scripture With all eyes on the struggle against organized white supremacy in the United States, what can each of us do to honor and carry forward the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? One thing we at CLBSJ feel called to do is to search out the parts of our scripture that forces of hate and division have seized and mobilized toward their ends, and do the work of disentangling, cl...eansing, liberating. You are invited to dive into this work this Thursday, January 21, at 7:30 EST with CLBSJ Board Chair Nicholas Johnson and New Testament scholar Dong Hyeon Jeong. Attendees are invited to review Dong Hyeon's article, When the KKK Exegetes: Circulating Hate with 2 Peter, published in Spring 2020 by the Association of Jewish Studies, in advance.
