As Fall approaches, hunting seasons in New York begin a new cycle in earnest. While small game seasons run for much of the year (squirrel season began on September 1st), the action really picks up when the big game seasons come around. The first of these is Early Bear Season, which will run from September 12th through September 27th in our area this year. The more popular regular season for bear and deer will run from November 21st through December 13th. These big game seaso...ns allow the use of rifles and shotguns. While there are few accidents during these seasons they do happen, sometimes with tragic results. If you do hike in the Catskills during this time, wear blaze orange - and dress your pets in orange as well. If you prefer to hike in areas where hunting is not allowed during these seasons, we have listed a number of locations in the vicinity of the Catskills.
